What is the big bump on big dogs heads for?

Hello Everyone,

We have a Great Dane and on the back of his skull is a large bump. This is typical of the breed and I’ve seen this on some other large dogs as well. Any idea what this bump us there for? Some owners call it a “knob”. Not that big of deal, just wondering why it’s there.

It’s the sagittal crestand it’s related to jaw muscle strength. We ain’t got one because our wimpy jaw muscles end around our temples.

It makes it easier to crack their shells when it’s time to hatch.

what?

To help hold on their hats.
Thank you Zipper! I always wondered about that.

My wife always called it an egg tooth.

Everyone around here (the park, that is) knows that it’s their smart bump, or intelligence bump.

A vet told me that that sign of intelligence gets bigger if they lose weight.

I think the causative explanation is mighty clear.

Also very prominent in the adult male [del]Klingon[/del] California Sea Lion.

A friend of mine called the prominent one on a late dog of mine her vertical stabilizer.

Thanks Zipper, it all comes clear now. That explains why there hasn’t been a doggie toy yet invented that lasts more than 10 minutes after Gunner the Great Dane™gets a hold of it. I swear he could chew through a metal pipe if he wanted to.
