I’m just spitballing here but I keep getting these very aggressive ads (texts) to donate to Kamala. The one I just received said something like "we have to stop Trump at all cost. We will match your donation 500%. And then some words at the bottom that didn’t make sense. These seem overly scammy, and not very presidential.
Of course I swiped and deleted but it dawned on me I wouldn’t actually know where that money would have gone. In another thread DWMarch wrote:
And certainly his people can (and have shown they are willing). What are the chance they are stooping low enough to run donation campaigns ostensibly by Kamala but actually funneling that money to Trump. Would that be possible?
Yes, It’s possible, and I wouldn’t put it past them, but I don’t think it would be around very long since someone would figure it out and the blow-back would be intense.
How do you know you aren’t being scammed by the Trump campaign, Russia, or China? Go to the official Harris 2024 website and donate there. If it turns out their website has been hacked, then we’re all fucked.
If you want to be paranoid, and it is probably a good thing to be, donate to an absolutely verified site like ActBlue — Kamala Harris — Kamala Harris most other sites are less likely to be secure or 100% for the Harris-Walz campaign.
Please note, this is pretty much the same as @dolphinboy’s link.
I treat all those texts as spam, and block the numbers. They keep coming, from different numbers, which proves (to me) that they were spam in the first place. My advice is, at a minimum, to NOT send them any money, or even click on anything in them.
^ This is the correct answer. Do not even open them - just delete from the preview screen. I think if you open it, it sends something back to the sender indicating your number is a live number with a real person attached to it. Just delete without opening it.
I can’t block the number without opening the message (at least not on my android phone, believe me, I’ve checked). So which is better, blocking or just deleting?
Yeah blocking is good, but the scammers keep spoofing numbers. Have you tried just holding your finger on the message until a check mark appears (but does not open the message)? Then a garbage can/delete option should appear (and you can opt to block the number here as well). At least that’s how it works on my Android.
Yeah, I’d think it was more likely just going to a random scammer than to Trump. Trump is too much in the spotlight.
Granted, money going to the scammer might mean you donate less to Kamala. But I just expect it is a garden variety scammer.
I guess if you want a 4D chess option, it could be someone calling you repeated hoping you’ll get mad at the Harris campaign.
I wonder if your phone has the ability to block messages based on text and not on the phone number? If I had that, I’d block any that mention Kamala or Trump.
Just wanted to check back in and say that, since I’ve been handling these spam messages this way, the volume has gone way down. So thanks again @snowthx.
