What is the deal with this Nazi's face in this photograph?

Now that I’ve thought about it some more, I think the circle is something like a ring-binder hole in the photograph.

OK, I’ve got it figured out from looking closesly at Fubaya’s enlarged images.
You can obviously see the Stormtrooper-style helmet on the guy and the outline of his face, if you look carefully.

I’ve created this image with my crude illustrations over the photos to display where the guy’s head actually is, versus where I thought it was.

I think he is waering a garrison cap (at a slight angle) and his right eye is barely visible below the shadow created by the front tip.

Holy crap. It’s Speed Racer!

Seriously, though, thanks. I think you nailed it. I can see it now. It was driving me nuts. That ring shape really skews the perception.

That’s what it looks like to me. There’s a guy in the foreground, looking downwards. You can scarcely see any of his face below his helmet, which has a circular marking on the front. There is another figure directly behind him, and all you can see is his helmet. The two upper eye-like dark marks are part of this helmet or just below it. The helmet resembles that on the figure to the right of the guy we are talking about.

I think taking the circular marking as the front of the helmet makes the helmet too low. There wouldn’t be enough room for his head and neck.

I like GuanoLad’s interpretation the best. It looks proportionate and the guy’s standing in a natural position. And that circular feature is so out of place it makes more sense as a flaw in the image. Plus, in GuanoLad’s picture you can see that the eyes/nose structures of the two men standing side-by-side make a very similar image.

Judging by the scale, if that were a hole for a binder, it’d have to be either a gigantic photograph, or a tiny binder. I think it’s more likely it’s just a random hole in the picture.

Here is one in which I have cut out exactly the same shape for both heads - neither of the cut-out sections look particularly like faces, however, what’s important here is that they both look very similar.

This is actually an object lesson in how camouflage can work so well - not by hiding something, but by confounding its edges.

Wow, that’s quite interesting. So what’s that big dark splotch that both of the Nazis have on their hats?

Looks Klingon, to me.

Thanks to the OP, I now have Spike Jones’ Der Fuehrer’s Face going through my head:

When Der Fuehrer says, “We ist der master race”
We HEIL! HEIL! Right in Der Fuehrer’s face
Not to love Der Fuehrer is a great disgrace
So we HEIL! HEIL! Right in Der Fuehrer’s face

Maybe if I concentrate on Idol With The Golden Head I can banish Spike Jones.
Oh noooooooooo…

This is as confusing as a two headed storm-trooper :smack:*

Why would you want to banish Spike Jones?

My first impression is that the officer is looking down at the body on his feet and we are seeing shadows on the top of his hat.

That is the one I’m going with. I think the outline of the rim of the hat is merged with something in the background, but the shiney brim and crest are clear.

Tammy Faye Nazi!

I think that’s it. They’re both wearing garrison caps, and the black blob on the left side (from his perspective) of the guy to our left is just the shadow below his brow.

Is that dark splotch likely the military insignia on the cap? Where it faces forward?
