What is the Difference between MPSIMS and IMHO ?

I’ve got an idea for a post, but Im torn on where it goes.

Through expereince (and a few of my posts getting moved) I’ve come to learn that anything dealing with TV and MUSIC goes to Cafe Society, even if it is a General Question.

That being said, what is standard for MPSIMS V IMHO ?

Perhaps a Stickied Post on General Defs per the Subsections is needed?

If you’re expecting sympathy, “me too” or similar anecdote replies, it’s MPSIMS.

If you’re expecting a divergence of opinion, it’s IMHO.

If you’re expecting a divergence of opinion and cites to back it up, it’s GD.

MPSIMS is fun but essentially meaningless babble. “For general discussion: from frivolous chatter to deep thoughts; from harmless diversions to life-changing announcements.” “I like ice cream”
IMHO is for debates on subjects that are less serious than GD. You could call it “MD” for “Minor Debates”.“What’s your favorite …?” For frank exchanges of views on less-than-cosmic topics. This is also the place for polling." Batman vs Superman for example

(Bolding, mine.) The forum description goes beyond “frivolous chatter,” making your interpretation too restrictive.

Also not entirely correct. MPSIMS has a lot of serious discussion, from events in the news to more personal, intimate matters such as divorce, affairs, problems with immediate family members, the loss of a job, etc… The forum does not require “me too” or even sympathetic responses; what it does require, however, is civility and moderation of response. Disagreement happens every day in MPSIMS, and to some degree, debates that don’t quite meet the criteria for being Great Debates; all we ask is that you remain polite.

Three of the forums are related to content: Comments on Cecil’s Columns and Comments on Staff Reports are related to Cecil’s Columns and Staff Reports, and Cafe Society is related to arts, entertainment, etc.

The other forums are basically devoted to the style or type of discussion being sought.

  • General Questions forum is intended for questions that have fixed and definite answer, while Great Debates forum is intended for questions that have no single definitive answer.
  • MPSIMS is when you want to share something, possibly seeking feedback; by contrast, IMHO is when you want to take a poll or get different opinions. For example, “My grandmother died today” would be in MPSIMS. It’s not “meaningless babble” but neither are you looking to hear different people’s opinions. You’re expecting a discussion that is sympathetic and may involve other people sharing their experiences.
In contrast, “Where’s a great vacation spot?” would go in IMHO. You’re looking for a variety of opinions. It’s not a Great Debate because there’s no debate involved, opinions are opinions.

That help?

ITA. I got myself a pretty good smackdown goin’ in IMHO recently.

Should’a posted it in MPSIMS, even though it didn’t feel mundane.

I think you’d have still steered into trouble, whichever of those two forums you chose in the first place, MizGrand. Folks are supposed to remain civil in both, but the fine line between “feedback” and “opinion” can and has become blurred when folk feel strongly enough about something. Sometimes, for me, MPSIMS and IMHO are like an old phrase I use from time to time: “Six of one, and half-dozen of the other”. In other words – not a lot of difference in some cases.

Why do you keep bringing this up? Don’t you think it would be best to just let it drop?

Can we settle this with mod jell-o wrestling?

(Obviously, Meeko, this is a finely nuanced and on-going discussion. Just post where it seems best and don’t sweat it if it gets moved around. Many threads become something other than what they were when they started, anyway. The mods only get annoyed if you make frequent and really obvious errors. The IMHO MPSIMS confusion is well-known and tolerated.)

<deleted everything I just typed>

Nah, Dex and I are on the same page. The bolded part in your quote refers to his example of “My grandmother died today.” My post wasn’t pointing out any specific thread or subject; instead, it was correcting misconceptions about the forum as a whole.

With posters and interests as diverse as we have here on the SDMB, there will probably always be threads that don’t quite fit within the fora descriptions. In Dex’s example, I’d be hard-pressed to think of a disagreement about a grandmother’s death that wouldn’t cross over into being a jerk, and thus wouldn’t be allowed by board rules. But, the majority of threads in MPSIMS aren’t about family members dying, and a lot of the ones that do deal with family ask for input, which means disagreement and (slight) debate are not out of the question.

So, no Jell-O wrestling today. My schedule’s taken up with a pudding match.

Besides, Administrators are in a different weight class than Moderators.

Shucks.

You just wanted to clean them up after.

'Tis true words, dat dere.
