I would appreciate your sentences on the subject.
You’ve heard the sentences on the subject already, and yet you still insist that if a concept cannot be reduced to a single word, then that concept is faulty.
I don’t know. Are you?
In all seriousness, I observe that many people go through a phase of… trans-discomfort when they first engage with the idea of transpeople. I suspect you are among them, based on your posting on the SDMB. Most people move on, however, and i think you likely will do so. Best wishes.
@puzzlegal, I apologize for dragging you into another thread.
@Czarcasm, I apologize for dragging you into another thread.
I just want to remind everyone that the OP and I had this exchange just over a week ago:
OP never responded and peaced out of the thread, which carried on for a few more days and then went quiet. Then it was revived by a new poster, and the OP jumped back in. At no point has anyone called OP transphobic, despite OP’s having asked people directly, and yet here OP is again mischarachterizing the opposition, claiming
And asking
And implying it’s everyone else getting “worked up”:
And even offering to pay $100 if someone will go into another thread and call people transphobic, as if that’s what’s been done to OP:
Just in case anyone thought OP was engaging in good faith here.
Another thread just chock full of gendered language.
There is no debate, no insults hurled that every poster who uses the term “woman” or “woman’s reproductive rights”.
In that thread, it is assumed that “human that can get pregnant” means a woman. In this thread, that would be trans phobic.
I am just asking for some consistency. Including from the overlapping posters to both threads.
.
Conversational context is what you seem to be missing in this case.
This thread elevates the awareness of misgendering right from the title. The other thread is not really in the same realm.
Would a man who menstruates or a man who had an abortion feel the “inclusiveness” of the language used in either of the threads I have linked to?
Do those threads live up to the stated goals of the SDMB?
“Context” shouldn’t matter. In a thread about trans issues, you gotta walk a fine line. As long as it just “normal” conversation, well, use all the gendered terms you want.
When it is in the same realm, maybe we will be more inclusive.
What species are you discussing here?
With humans, context always matters.
What the hell is your point?
men have abortions is my point
So what?
we can use gendered non-inclusive language depending on context?
We can and we do.
Or are you asking if we may?
Which is again affirmative.
Of course, now you are welcome to worry about correctly identifying the context…
Again, please quote these phantom insults you insinuate are being hurled in other threads.
(I know you won’t because they don’t exist, but I’m not going to let this slide without pointing it out. Again.)
Though it’s been a long rough road, and we haven’t reached the goal, hopefully we’ve created an environment inclusive and civil enough that they’d speak up. And we’d take note and adjust.
There are no insults hurled in the other threads. That’s my point. Nobody is hurling insults about people saying women menstruate or women have abortions.
Nobody gets all worked about genitals in those threads.
Why do you get worked up up genitals in this thread?
Oh wait. “Context”…we can use non inclusive language in one thread but not another.
Who is getting worked up about genitals in this thread? Cite, please.
This thread that mentions genitals in the title?
Come the fucking fuck on.
