I’m not talking “witty”, “humorous” or “sly”-I’m talking FUNNY. “Laugh out loud” funny. “Blow Coke out your nose” funny. “Damn! Shoulda wore Depends” funny. The kind of movie you had to watch three or four times because you missed some good parts while you were rolling on the floor.
One rule, though-it has to be deliberately funny.
Police Academy (uncut version). The wusses don’t make 'em like this any more, i.e. funny.
Either The Producers or A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. Or maybe Blazing Saddles.
I don’t know if The Producers is the funniest ever, but its the only film to have me literally rolling around on the floor laughing (during the “Springtime for Hitler” dance routine).
I’m going with Mel Brooks too. For me it’s a toss up between Blazing Saddles or History of the World. Young Frankenstein isn’t bad either.
I’ve thought about it, and for just out-and-out balls-to-the-wall funny, I’ve opted for Blazing Saddles.
Reverend Johnson: Order, order. Goddamnit I said “order”.
Howard Johnson: Y’know, Nietzsche says: “Out of chaos comes order.”
Olson Johnson: Oh, blow it out your ass, Howard.
Spaceballs. There was a period of about three years back when I was younger where I watched it about twice per week. I’ve seen it at least 200 times and I still find it funny.
Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle. “NPH would not do that!”
The Big Lebowski - I hope this is what you are looking for, I know I hurt after watching it…
As a Chaplin fan…
Modern Times
Any of the following 6.
Animal House
Blues Brothers
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Airplane
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Jim
I’m going to have to go with Blazing Saddles.
“Where all the white women at?”
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Duck Soup
Airplane
Love and Death
Best in Show. This is Spinal Tap may get more acclaim, but I find it drags slightly toward the end. Best in Show makes my face hurt every time I see it because I laugh pretty much the entire movie.
One of the Mel Brooks films with the exception of The Producers which, although a cult favourite for Springtime For Hitler, has very few laughs for a Brooks movie. I really like Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot movies but have not yet seen Playtime. A friend tells me that it is the best comedy ever made - almost overpoweringly funny yet full of more social comment than anyone else’s work. It should arrive this week from Quickflix so within days I will know.
Duck Soup
The Man in the White Suit
My list of favorites overlap heavily with the names bandied about. I’d say South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Young Frankenstein, Office Space, and Life of Brian are in the inner circle for me, with Airplane! taking the top honor.
Office Space and Harold and Kumar go to White Castle are two of the only movies that can guarantee laughs from me at any time. I just have to fast forward to the awkward cake-passing scene or the fake anti-drug PSA to forget all my troubles. I find television much funnier than most movies- there’s less time for a sappy ending.
I’d have to go with Blazing Saddles or the Holy Grail. The Big Liebowski sucked donkey turds. And I rarely am that harsh on a movie.
The first 15 minutes of ‘Going South’ (with Jack Nicholson and Christopher Lloyd) get my (partial) vote. After that it turns into a plain ‘romanic comedy’ (not between those 2, of course)
Y’know, I have to give mention to Better Off Dead. First time I saw it was in college, with about a hundred other people, and we laughed loud enough to be heard across the quad.
“Gee, I’m real sorry your mom blew up, Ricky.”
“This is PURE SNOW! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?”
“Now that’s a real shame when folks be throwin’ away a perfectly good white boy like that.”
“TWOOOO DOLLARS…”
“Two brothers… One speaks no English, the other learned English from watch “The Wide World of Sports.” So you tell me… Which is better, speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cosell?”
Kung Fu Hustle. I laughed so hard I missed some of the subtitles.
