What is the Import of Mike Johnson's Win as Speaker of the House?

That’s a more generous interpretation than I’m inclined to make. I think it’s morally problematic to make a child responsible for an adult’s behaviour, especially a parent’s. Let’s say Johnson does watch Johnson Takes a Big Johnson up the… Turnpike in a moment of weakness. What would the son be expected to do, and avoid doing, to regulate his father’s behaviour?

I don’t think they’re (consciously) interested in sharing porn, but I do think the whole situation is deeply disturbing.

Yup.

Johnson is in some kind of “covenant marriage”, which seems to be some kind of Christian sharia-law marriage, but recognized as special in the courts.

That doesn’t seem terribly strange. Wikipedia article.

Well, very few people go for it, and it seems to be a way to get around no-fault divorce laws, which have been a lifesaver for lots of people in terrible marriages, sometimes literally a life saver. From the name, it’s obviously some kind of Christian thing, and the people who pushed for it are Christian extremists.

How is this relevant to this thread? As I mentioned much earlier, having a Christian extremist, probably a Dominionist, isn’t great in a position with that much power.

He seems like a very weird, uberconservative guy. Not good to have him just two heartbeats away from the Presidency.

I heard it as, Why don’t Baptists approve of premarital sex? Because it might lead to dancing.

I was ready to disagree, until I found this section. Emphasis added:

The accounts to be reported under these rules include interest-bearing, cash-deposit accounts at banks, credit unions, and savings and loan associations, including interest-bearing checking accounts, passbook, and other savings accounts; money market accounts; negotiable order of withdrawal (NOW) accounts; certificates of deposit (CDs); and individual retirement accounts (IRAs) held in the form of savings accounts or CDs

The Daily Beast article got the story wrong: Johnson apparently could have a non-interest bearing checking account of any amount without reporting requirements. Page 45 of the Committee on Ethics 2023 instruction guide is even more explicit on this point. That said, Johnson’s reporting still raises suspicions.

Yeah, if he puts all of his salary into non-interest bearing accounts, one wonders about his financial acumen and/or advice that he’s receiving. Nobody who makes six figures a year does that. Nobody.

8 days until shutdown, and Johnson can’t pull it together. House was suppose to vote on transportation funding and financial services & general gov funding. Both bills were yanked due to squabbles within the Republican Party. Former businessman and hard nosed representative Sean Casten (D-IL6) provides the lowdown:

General situation:

  1. Note: ALL of these bills violate the law we passed last June. But having discovered that Ds won’t vote to break the law, they are trying to pass these with all R votes. But they’re big mad at each other so even that’s not possible.

So what did the GOP do this week?

  1. A bill to prevent the government from using the word “latin-x” - a bill to cut WH press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s salary to $1 - a bill to defund the office of gun violence prevention - a bill to eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau -
  2. A bill to cut SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s salary to $1 - a bill to defund the office of gun violence prevention - a bill to prevent the government from developing greenhouse gas disclosure rules - a bill to eliminate 50% of the budget for the consumer product safety commission.
  3. These things aren’t urgent. They aren’t helpful. And they aren’t going to become law (See: laws require Senate + POTUS approval). But they keep the idiot wing of the @HouseGOP from turning on their rookie manager. And waste 435 people’s time on the House floor.

If far-right messaging bills were the price of running the government, well then sometimes you have to toss raw meat to rabid dogs. But it appears that even having their guy leading the GOP doesn’t fix the fundamentals.

So I guess we’ll have a shutdown followed by hard right capitulation. Skilled politicians don’t make things so difficult for themselves but these aren’t smart guys and things got out of hand.

All of these dumb provisions to cut Biden Administration officials’ salaries to $1 are almost certainly unconstitutional bills of attainder, per United States v. Lovett.

The reason giving for attempting to cut Karine Jean-Pierre’s salary down to $1 is that she has repeatedly lied to the American people, acted condescendingly towards reporters, and is an election-denier (in this case, of the 2016 election).

Sound like anyone you know? Republicans really have no self-awareness.

Johnson has unveiled his plan for a continuing resolution to fund the government beyond this coming week and it is baffling. Although details haven’t been released, it will apparently provide for a two-tiered extension of government funding, with some agencies funded through January 19 and others through February 2. He thinks this will help avoid an omnibus spending bill (the inevitable final outcome of all this) because . . . reasons? Democrats are opposed because it is stupid, and Freedom Caucus members he hoped to entice with this genius ploy are shit-talking it because it doesn’t include spending cuts (which are all they really care about).

It seems to me that he just needed to tee up something that isn’t a traditional clean CR that would only pass with Democratic votes cause he’s seen how that ends.

I wonder if he’s having second thoughts yet about taking this job.

/s

That would require having thoughts in the first place. I haven’t seen any evidence of that, and quite a bit of evidence to the contrary.

I take your well made point.

This chirpy nonentity from the back bench was thrust into a powerful position. If this was a movie, the nonentity would get a swollen head, and think he can now promote his pet agenda, only to be brought back to reality by the real powers that be.

Nah, in the movies this backwoods Louisianna lawyer unexpectedly thrust into a position of power would use his innate humanity and homespun wisdom to make the jaded members of the Freedom Caucus remember the idealism that led them to first run for office, and usher in a new era of common-sense governing.

Unfortunately, the ideals that drove the FC to run for office from the beginning were tearing down the federal government and demonizing liberals.

So this is what it’s come down to: an insurrectionist, Bible thumping George McFly cosplayer is second in line for the presidency. Please God, let the Dems take the House in 2024. Amen.

Preach it, brother!

There is no way to talk sense to these people. That’s the problem. They have already fallen for the lies. And won’t back down. Won’t listen to reason. It is very hard to do for someone that has been totally brainwashed.

They don’t have to admit they where wrong, but just be open to other views. Talk about it.

I’ve know a few personally. If I calmly disagree with an opinion, they ran out of the room crying “You hate me!”.

Umm… no, I didn’t hate you. But now I feel pity (and will NEVER turn my back on you, I’m a little frightened of you).

Please explain the Marty McFly father reference.
