What is the latest data on reinfection?

The last I looked it was certainly possible to be infected more than once. Have they narrowed down the likelihood of being sick more than once?

Not bringing this up out of thin air. I was vaccinated and caught Covid first week in December. A week ago I got my booster. Today I found out I was exposed to someone who just tested positive.

Idiot anti-vax Hubs caught OC and recovered, then caught Delta 6 weeks later.

Vaxxed me didn’t get Original Covid and only had a few minor cold symptoms when I tested positive while hubs was suffering for two and a half weeks from Delta.

COVID is a sneaky bitch. Assume the worse until you know better and mask up.

Vaccination is far less effective at preventing infection against the ‘Omicron’ variants (multiple) but it is still quite effective at preventing severe disease resulting in hospitalization and (at least from preliminary findings) post-acute sequelae (‘long covid’).

I suspect you had delta if your infection was early dec. Reinfection rate with Omicron after a delta infection is 5x higher than previous reinfection rates. On the bright side, you’re infection was pretty recent AND you’re boosted. Antibody levels rise more quickly after a booster shot than in the original schedule. Hope all turns out well.

My illness was at the beginning of the Omicron wave around here but it was definitely part of that wave. It swept through work like no other time during the pandemic. We have 3 out with long Covid symptoms from earlier in the pandemic. Everyone hit during the Omicron wave had mild cases including me. I would be very surprised if I had delta. My test did not show what variant.

Okay, if that’s the case, you are pretty unlikely to be infected again with the same variant.

Stranger’s link says otherwise.

Odds are your won’t get seriously ill, though.

I wasn’t particularly worried about myself. I was in the same room as the person but not in close contact. It’s possible but not likely I would get infected even without my protections. I was using that as a launching point for the general question.

That’s BA.2 which is genetically, pretty distinct from BA.1 (original omicron). It hasn’t overtaken BA.1 so chances are the exposure were BA.1. To clarify, probability of reinfection with BA.1 after having BA.1 is probably pretty low. Probability of reinfection with BA.2 after having BA.1 is much higher BUT levels of BA.2 circulating in the population relative to BA.1 is still fairly low. Just starting to uptick in New York.
