I’m trying to sell my 1992 Honda Accord. The back windshield seems too angled for someone behind me to get a good view of the sign. So I put it on my left rear window. This has the least impact on my view. Plus, when the car is parked on a street, more people can view it. Does this make sense, of is there a better spot for it?
I have a friend who put a “For Sale” sign in her car (rear window), and she got a ticket after parking in the street once. Apparently there’s some kind of law against selling things like this on the street. However, I don’t think they always do this.
Some people write a price and a phone number on the rear window. Maybe this is a way of technically avoiding a ticket. Check your local laws.
On somebody’s Lexus.
Get it listed on the Internet, too. AutoTrader has free ads; for $25, you can place an ad in their Auto Extra section that runs for six months or until the car is sold, whichever comes first.
Also, try craiglist They have quite a few ads on there for older cars. I believe that type of ad would be free.
Over the dent.
I’ll second Auto Trader. It’s cheaper than a classified ad in my city’s daily, you include a picture, and almost everyone who reads the thing is looking for a car,
My smartass thought was ‘A used car lot’
I’ve never had a whole lotta luck selling cars.
Thanks for the help. I’ve posted to Craig’s List. But I’ve gotten 3 calls already just from my strategic placement on my car.
I’ll second (third? fourth?) the placement in AutoTrader - you’ll draw from the largest audience of actual car shoppers, the market will extend beyond your normal route to/from work, and IMHO you have the best shot at getting top price for the sale, or at least a quick sale. What’s worked for me, and YMMV, is to take a nice picture and then spend some time writing the ad - the more descriptive the better (no sense putting in cryptic abbreviations when word-count is virtually unlimited) and let your ‘voice’ come across so the prospective buyer identifies with you and gains trust that the car is well-cared-for. Hope this helps.
Auto Trader didn’t give me an option to post on the internet for free. Maybe in NJ, they don’t do that. Here’s what I wrote to Craig’s list:

210,000 miles. Runs great! It’s never had a major problem. Oil changed every 3,000 miles religiously. A/C works great! A couple of rust spots; nothing major. Radio/Cassette player works, but needs to be flicked on and off sometimes; may need to be replaced. Missing one hubcap.
Reason for selling: Car was stolen 3 months ago and I went out and bought a new one. Now I have this extra car. It’s completely fixed up with a brand new driver’s side lock and brand new ignition.
The clean side of the car.
