I love trivia and know a few bits and pieces, but what would you say is the most interesting thing you know? Feel free to add how you know it and all that…
The letter M was a gift from the space aliens evolving us.
a wink is a s good as a nod
I know how many trees are on the university of kansas campus.
But that’s not so interesting.
In an attempt to post a (sort of) serious answer, I found the following about felines:
Cats have more than one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten. (Duh. Cats rule.)
Cats purr at about 26 cycles per second, the same frequency as an idling diesel engine. (Purrr.)
Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run. The only other animals to do this are the giraffe and the camel. (Hmmm.)
Cat’s urine glows under a black light. (TMI!)
Scotland is not the only place you’ll find bagpipes being played. Macedonians play them too. Interesting little fact, I know since I’m Macedonian. I think it’s true. Any other cultures?
If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would produce enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
Pigs have orgasms that last about 30 minutes.
Humans and dolphins are the only animals who have sex for pleasure.
Cats have taste sensors in their paws–not strong ones, but effective enough to tell if something tastes, say, poisonous or non-poisonous, so that the cat may decide whether or not to eat it. This is one reason why cats bat food around with their paws.
Drinking a bunch of cough syrup to get high isn’t dangerous because of the drug (which is relatively safe in and of itself), but because of the other ingredients in cough syrup. These ingredients, of course, are 100% safe when consumed in quantities appropriate for cough suppression.
It’s legal to have nitrous oxide for use as a recreational drug (or to sell as a legal recreational drug), but it’s illegal to have it for use in your car. (USA)
It’s illegal to sell something that is not a legal drug, as an illegal drug. For example, it’s legal to sell pill-shaped (non-‘special’) candy as candy, but if you get caught selling the same candy as Ecstasy you’re in a world of hurt. (Ecstasy is the biggest example of this–a lot of E you would buy on the street or in clubs isn’t the real thing, but a mix of candy and/or other drugs and/or various things you wouldn’t eat in a million years. There’s a small but significant group of people, for example, who sell dog worming pills as Ecstasy. Yuck.)
You can all of a sudden end up in Pittsburgh, it is just not that likely.
It’s true. You can look it up under quantum physics.
That’s really a toss up, but the question should be “who” is the most interesting thing you know. I would have to say thing 2, although thing 1 does crack me up.
“Hmmm”, indeed, since it’s not entirely true. What you have described is known as a “lateral gait”, or “pace”. Other animals, such as horses, dogs, elephants, brown bears also use such a gait on occassion. Cats also use a standard “transverse” gait when walking slowly.
As for intersting stuff I know…hmmm…well, I know a bunch of other junk about animal locomotion (including the wing motions birds use in flapping flight), what a dinosaur really is (to systematists), that icthyosaurs had reverse heterocercal tails (meaning their spines went into the lower lobe of the tail fin), while sharks have a “normal” heterocercal fin (in which the spine continues into the upper lobe of the tail fin), and…ummm…a bunch of other stuff that probably isn’t really all that interesting after all (except to me!).
[B movie]I’d tell you, but then I’d have to kill you![/B movie]
I could explain the disease hereditary hemochromatosis in excruciating detail, down to the molecular level.
Well, it’s interesting to me.
did you know that a duck’s quack doesn’t echo, and no-one knows why

:: utkik glances nervously at the SDMB 2 X 4’s being dusted off ::
Yes, Galicia (western part of Spain). They call them gaitas. Celtic culture, and looks more like Ireland or Scotland than any other part of Spain. Wonder whether there´s any connection between landscape and music
I know why women go to the restroom in groups.
<singsong> But III’m no-ot tell-ingggg! </singsong>
I know the truth about Cats and Dogs.
but you wouldnt really be interested.
This seems an appropriate place to begin the unleashing of my stockpile of two-cent coins.
Firstly, ducks’ quacks do echo. That one is just an urban legend.
The whip was the first human invention to break the sound barrier.
Eventually the moon will revolve around the earth at the same speed as the earth’s rotation. This means the moon will be stationary in the sky, and one side of the world will never see the moon again.
With a bit of training, it is possible to turn the odds of casino blackjack in your favour by about 1%.
Just debunking a few of these…
Humans, Dolphins and Bonobos Chimps have sex for pleasure snopes
very true http://www.bagpipesonly.com/origin.htm. I think the scots first took bagpipes from the Romans when they were over here. I have no idea why they are the only people who still think they sound good though.
The Ducks quack does echo cite
However, ducks don’t bounce.
They do if you throw them hard enough.

The longest commonly-used word in english that can be typed using only the top row of keys on a typewriter is:

OK, kinda subjective. But I like it
Better:
When the Spaniards landed in Mexico, they asked where they were. The natives answered “Yucatan.”
It means “I can’t understand you.”
