What is the name of this artist?

I’m pretty sure he is a man, I know that there is a book of his work out and that it’s available at Barnes & Noble, because that’s where I first discovered him. He does these beautiful nature illustrations reminiscent of Audubon, except the animals are portrayed in very violent or sexual situations. I remember one specific (large) picture of an elephant surrounded by different species of birds, and it’s trampling some of them. Does anyone know who I’m talking about?

Damn. Yes. And the works are huge and done in a sort of take on 19th-century allegorical style. And he was profiled in “Vogue” six or eight years ago. And I have no freaking idea what his name is.

Yes, twickster, we’re on the right track. I kind of remember parts of his profile … he grew up in Africa … or somewhere … argh! I’m gonna be up all night searching the B&N website.

Sounds interesting.

I saw a painting of a wolf attacking a deer. Except that it really looked like the wolf is doing the deer doggie-style. And really enjoying himself. Strange picture. Its hanging in my bank. I’m sure its not done by the guy your looking for.

Please clean the bathroom.

Okay, I googled “artist elephant allegory vogue” and the first item was this one. Don’t know if Walton Ford is who you were thinking of, but he’s definitely who I was thinking of.

(And I was way off on the “Vogue” date – it was 2000)

That’s him! Yes! Thank you, twickster, you’ve earned infinate kudos.

You’re welcome – but it’s those wizards at google who deserve the credit. Thanks for the reminder about this guy – I remember thinking when I read the article how much I liked his work.

I love the “Starling” one and the “Dirty Dick Burton…” one, but I’m not sure I get the point of “Boca Grande” (a bunch of herons eating frogs? Well, yeah, that’s what they do!) and the “Nila” one I don’t get at all. Of course it would help if I could see them IRL, or at least larger pictures.

Wow, I will most definitely have to pick up that book. He did the rhino painting that’s on the cover of David Quammen’s “The Boilerplate Rhino” that I lust after.

I also hunted online for prints, but they seem to be impossible to find. Pity.

Oh my GOD! He painted “Monkey with a Hookah”! My friend has that as a lightswitch-plate. For the, um… Zen Room.

Never mind.
