The higher figure is ten times the current wealth of Bill Gates and more than the top 40 individuals on the Forbes 400 American billionaires combined.
Yet there is only one Rockefeller on that list: David, at 159 with a mere $2.5 billion. Splitting the wealth among an ever-increasing number of family members, along with huge charitable contributions, keeps a few of them wealthy but de-concentrated that wealth to piddly proportions on a world scale.
Same with the Rothschilds. I’d need better sources than 19th century newspaper articles for their contemporary wealth - newspapers liked big numbers then as much as today and didn’t have the resources to check them out if they tried - but even assuming they were number 1 in the world in 1875 says exactly nothing about their position today. The world has moved on: only conspiracies never change.
One thing I’ve observed about CTists, when delving into matters such as the Federal Reserve/World Bank, etc., is some of them have an insistence on identifying the financial or corporate Illuminati in terms of families. Not of affinity or common interest groups, but of families. And the Rothschilds are a convenient target due to their background and the fact that since they’re no longer particularly extraordinary in the world of finance, they’ve fallen largely outside the public stage so people are not up to date on what’s up with them.
But another thing is, when at their peak it doesn’t sound like they were particularly conspiratorial. ISTM like everyone knew who they were and what they did and where to find them, and that they had money by the boxcar; and they would acquire noble titles and appear in the society pages. Some shadowy cabal!
there is a good book titled “founder” that can give you a good backround on how the family got started and worked. it is about meyer rothschild and how he lived, worked, and gave the famiy a strong foundation.
the 5 brothers worked fairly well with each other and married within the family or within a rather close group of friends.
they and many wealthy families of that time had a way of holding the family money. the women got small portions if unmarried, the eldest son the lion’s share and any other sons would get a tad bit more than their spinster sister.
i’m sure things have spread out a bit moneywise, and marriage wise with the rothschilds as with many very wealthy families. once you start splitting money and assets evenly amoung your children and they go off and marry someone outside the family and wealth circle, you only have 10 million or so, instead of 10 hundred million.

One interesting claim that might be hard to debunk is that Rothschild influence was behind the alleged disappearance of papyri (which may have shed light on the true story of Exodus) from Tutankhamen’s tomb. It does seem clear that Howard Carter and a very small group which included the grand-daughter of Alfred Charles de Rothschild made an early unauthorized visit to the tomb. Carter’s patron, George Herbert Earl Carnaervon, was in financial trouble until he got a huge dowry by marrying the (illegitimate) daughter of Alfred Rothschild.
Also, it was Rothschild money that provoked the 1929 crash (they wanted to increase the price of their gold, and cover their shorts), financed Al-Qaeda, and staged the Moon landing hoax. They may have been behind the JFK assassination. (I don’t have cites for these; do you for yours, Rasskle ? )

Nonsense. Castles, unlike Bill Gates’ futuristic house, are the very foundation and paragon of wealth. That the wealth of the Rothschild family has been exceeded by lots of people, in China, India - point taken. However, look at Kensington Palace Gardens. Most of the current occupants of the street are embassies. Leonard Blavatnik, a Russian businessman, has a residence there. So does Indian steel tycoon, Lakshmi Mittal.
