Mrs. Napier wants “the new Rolling Stones CD” for Christmas, but it’s not clear to me what that means. Best guess is that it is “Grrr”, released in 2012 but apparently 3 CDs of old songs. Can anybody clue me in?
Maybe I have to ask her, but if I can get it without reminding her what she asked for, so much the better.
Grrr is the new Rolling Stones album; it’s a career-spanning compilation that includes two new tracks (they haven’t released a new studio album since 2005’s A Bigger Bang). Your problem may be that it comes in several different versions:[ul][li]50 tracks on 3 CDs including two brand-new tracks[/li]12 page booklet $22.99 at Amazon[li]50 tracks on 3 CDs including two brand-new tracks[/li]36-page hardback book

Christ on crutches, that’s a lot of tracks! I looked and the titles are mostly familiar (and I don’t know all that much about the Stones). Are they maybe new in the sense of being live versions that weren’t on previous albums? Or is recycling suddenly much more fashionable?
No, they’re all catalogue titles with the exception of “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” - hey, they’ve been recording for 50 years! It looks like there are some demos on a “Bonus CD” according to one Amazon reviewer, but it would appear the bulk of the set (even the super-deluxe version) is studio tracks, though it would appear (again, from the Amazon reviewers) that some tracks have been edited.
As for recycling, well, the Stones have been doing that forever. There was a 40-track collection called Forty Licks for their 40[sup]th[/sup], and they have released many best of collections through the years. This collection (Grrr) though, is very likely their last major retrospective (barring even-more inclusive box sets and the like), and so is attempting to be a more comprehensive overview of their entire catalogue.
