What Is The Origin Of Teh Rubber Chicken???

hi!
does anyone know? and why is it supposed to be funny?
ive looked everytwhere and cant find an answer :frowning: !!!

*bump * :stuck_out_tongue:

Rubber chickens are inherently funny. There probably was one at the Big Bang.

Ugh, no idea, really. Just giving a bump. Vaudeville, maybe? I’ve seen them in Hollywood films for a looong time.

the real question is what came first- the rubber chicken or the rubber egg.

<documentary> In the great rainforests of the Amazon, where whole forests of rubber trees grow wild, the clownis, playful, yet misunderstood Rubber Chicken roams the thickets in vast flocks, slaying and devouring every living thing that gets in it’s way.</documentary>

true - they r inherently funny -
ive always seen people get slapped with em… even funnier!!! i was just wondering where the idea came from…

Semi-wag:

Think “dinner theater” or other places where large numbers of people were fed as part of the event (fund-raisers, etc.).
The “food” had to be prepared and served all at once, and as cheaply as possible - quite a trick.
If you chop up a few dozen chicken and boil them long enough, they will become rubbery - this was what many people found on their plates at such events. The rubber chicken was a visual gag that people who endured such dinners could easily recognize.

FWIW even the International Rubber Chicken Society (Proof once again that there is a web site for everything!)http://www.baisoftware.com/brett/chicken.html
Tried to find the history and it came only with:

Some other places do mention the French connection:

Can any French dopers help a little? We are at an almost complete loss here!

Cecil?

For those who don’t know what the “Borscht Circuit” is, educate yourselves.

anyway, from:

guns and chickens?!!! crazy!

An predating the “Borscht circuit” , it probably was a staple in Vaudeville. I can’t cite but the idea of hitting someone with a rubber chicken probably goes back that far. The idea of a “rubber chicken” dinner is more modern.

And, at the risk of bringing the “junior mod police” down on me, I would in all politeness suggest to a new poster:

gigglesoup. Welcome to the boards. They do frown on bumping your own thread, just to get a response. Three and one-half hours ain’t long enough. Have patience. Give it time.
