A method or way of counting lines of text?

I believe “countlines” is used to refer to product lines of candy bars designed to be sold at counters (like at a convenience store). It would apply to pre-packaged individual candy bars as opposed to chocolate you’d buy at a confectioner or cooking chocolate.

what about softlines,selflines ?

And of course, softline

Well, maybe not in the candy field. A couple of the pages I looked at which listed candy by type, but without definition, used “selfline/softline” as a single descriptor. Perhaps the two words mean the same.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with your question, but I stumbled across “countline” and “contline” in The Oxford Dictionary of Ships and the Sea, where it was a modern, more refined version of what was originally the word “cuntline”, meaning the groove between the rope segments:

This was also called the “cunting”.

A nearby entry told how what was formerly called the “cunt splice” is now called the “cut splice”. Sailors arde nothing if not sensitive to etymology. And you should hear them curse.
