Let me explain. I ask because in the world of psychedelic drugs, someone who goes exploring on trips is sometimes called a “psychonaut”. Today I decided to come up with a word meaning the same thing except for sex. Like a sexual explorer, delving into new domains. Something that ends in “naut”. My first choice was “nymphonaut” because I think that sounds cool as hell. Upon googling though, nympho is specifically in reference to females. I’m unable to find a good prefix to replace it with, something gender neutral. Fornicate and copulate are words, but googling those prefixes doesn’t yield results.
The male analogue to “nymphonaut” might be “satyrnaut,” but I admit I don’t love either of those expressions. “-naut” is a Greek suffix meaning “sailor,” and it doesn’t make a lot of sense—not even metaphorically—to sail upon a nymph or a satyr.
The most direct neologism I can think of is “eronaut,” combining -naut with “eros” (sexual love). It’s still not ideal, because it’s a homophone with “aeronaut” for most English speakers.
I guess you could also go with somonaut, which would mean (approximately) “body sailor.”
ETA: AHunter3’s idea seems ok to me and isn’t a homophone for something else.
I regret that I did not notice this thread early enough to post this excellent and etymologically well-founded answer, so instead I will commend you for doing so.
