Well, I’ve read the thing… still got a copy of the newspaper.
I agree with much of what he says. The stuff about blowing people up because of it is just, well, *ucking Crazy-Ass, dude. NOT the answer.
I feel I understand, in part at least, what he was trying to convey. But I’m not a psychologist… I don’t quite get your question. Not meant to be insulting.
Could you explain it to me? What do you mean ‘what method is he using’? Beyond simple insanity and delusion, of course?
Well, I’m no psychologist, but as soon as you can cast a (to you) belittling or marginalizing label on something, it is much easier to demonize it. I do not know that there is a clinical name for it … there may well be, but I have NFC.
I have read large chunks of the manifesto and also the biography put out by Time magazine (several times), FWIW. And I would say that what is more at work in that piece is Kaczinsky’s formation due to his hospitalization and subsequent isolation from much of society than the logical bearing out of the tenets of his manifesto.
That and he likes to use big words. A lot. Sometimes where they are rather unnecessary;)
That first paragraph would, of course, be in addition to the paranoid schizophrenia, though I don’t know that I would attribute all of Kaczinsky’s thoughts to that. That (Para schizo) aspect of him was more borne out in his attacks (ie bombings) than the manifesto, though perhaps I should read it again if this becomes more than an IMHO/GQ thread in the Pit:)
Psychological method? Lying is a psychological method?
He’s making blanket statements that may be true of a handful of people, and asserting their truth in all cases. Shall I make some equally unsupported assertions?
“Gun owners value their right to own guns and other weapons over the lives and safety of other people, including their own family members. They are fearful of people who are different from them, and collect their guns to protect themselves from these ‘others.’ They gleefully conspire to subvert laws controling gun ownership.”
I’m sure I can produce at least one person of whom the above is true, or a group of people who collectively possess all of these attributes. Does that make it true?
“SUV owners exist in a permanently infantile state: they do not relate cause and effect (higher gasoline usage and pollution, heavy vehicles and traffic fatalities, etc.); they do not value (or they undervalue) the well-being of others; they perceive their environment as existing for their gratification. The immaturity of the SUV owner’s mind manifests itself in the rise of ‘road rage’ incidents, and in the extreme illogic of the rationalization of SUV ownership.”
Of course, the very acts of leaving one’s house, of eating food and excreting waste, and of owning any personal property, require some level of this sort of “selfishness.” It’s so much fun, though, to look at things with blinders on.
Interesting diagnosis, “paranoid schizophrenia” is. They pretty much label anyone they don’t understand or “get” with that. I have a Theory that could someday help explain it, buuut…I’m still working on it.
My brother and I were discussing a class he took on Adolf Hitler years ago, which tried to understand & explain exactly what his “mission” was and what kind of person he was, and basically, Hitler was a Destroyer. I can only presume that the Unabomber had much of the same mindset. And while I’ve never read either Mein Kampf or the Unabomber’s Manifesto (though I have copies of each, I’m just so lazy about reading non-fiction) I’d imagine they are written in the same method and style.
To adress the OP:
He is using his own personal psychological theories. It has been awhile but I believe he more or less admits that that is what he is doing in the essay itself.
Hi I know this as an old thread and iampunha probably doesnt post anymore. I saw Ted Kaczinski had been verbally messed with as an adult by some researchers. This could have contributed to his psyche but it could’ve had to be brutally intense to do so. Maybe he was prone to bad social reactions as a genetic thing too or his trust was betrayed by important people as a child too. I dont know really.
