I work in a department of all women. We all want to decorate our area & have started having turf wars.
It has occurred to me:
“What is the purpose of the nesting instinct?” Why do many women have it? Why do quite a few women like to decorate?
I don’t see what practical purpose nesting or decorating serves…except that it can be fun or restful.

Assuming there is an actual such instinct, or that is confined to just women in the human species…
My guess, the purpose of this drive is twofold:
Provide a safe environment for offspring.
Reserve enough resources to bring said offspring to maturity.
This would explain the staking out of space, rearranging of items within it, and comandeering items for use in said space. Would also explain when fierce turg battles can erupt, and possible hoarding/petty theft.
