What is the purpose of these wires on this highly modified Land Rover?

I love looking at rugged 4x4s on eBay, and I was particularly thrilled to see this fully outfitted Land Rover Series III. (Full auction page here.) But I am puzzled as to the purpose of those steel wires which appear to run from the brushguard up to the safari rack on both sides of the hood. I’ve been interested in off-roading and 4x4s for years, and I have never seen a feature like this in person nor even seen a picture of one until now. What are those wires for?

Aside from stabilizing that monstrous rack on the roof?

Also, any brush that that front guard pushes through would get guided up and away from the windshield.
