I forgot to mention in my post upthread about another big hit in Germany - The Producers. Even the musical version was a big hit.
As you may or may not know, American film titles are often changed in other languages.
The title of The Producers in German?
“Frueling Fuer Hitler!” (Springtime For Hitler!)
I have to admit, seeing that title on a movie theater marquee in Berlin, and in all the ads in the newspapers, was almost worth a gut busting laugh on its own!
Another vote for* Office Space*. Never, ever get tired of watching it and it ranks up there in quotability with other gems (not my official favorite ONEs but close) like Princess Bride and Clue.
But, it was a combination of the times (I had just graduated High School, heading to college), the radical treatment of the subject (it was the first of the raunchy teenage comedies), and the audience (a packed house of kids like me). The laughter in the audience was so loud and so long that I missed a lot of the dialog, but the movie was so damn funny that I was belly laughing along with everyone else.
I have the 25th Anniversary edition, and I love it, but it’s one of those movies that you really had to experience first-hand.
That’s funny. If I had been asked what your favorite Cary Grant comedy was, I would have guessed Arsenic and Old Lace.

Really? I would have guessed Philadelphia Story. Not his funniest comedy, but one of his best movies.
Roddy
Since I’m the OP and I haven’t weighed in yet, I’d like to present my selection.
This film has never failed to reduce me to tears, even in very public settings. I’ve seen it literally hundreds of times, and it always has the same effect on me.
I first saw this film back in 1999 or 2000 and then it took me a couple of years to track it down and get my own copy. When smartphones came out, I immediately ripped it so I could watch it whenever I wanted; it is the only piece of video or film that I always have on both my iPhone and my iPad.
Yes, this was very funny.
Sorry, I can’t narrow it down to one movie. Different movies seen at various times of my life, or even just various moods of my day to day existence, will either be totally hilarious to me, even on multiple viewings, or barely get an internal “yeah, that’s funny” reaction from me. I bet a similar thought is why so many people in this thread are offering multiple titles. It’s not to spite the OP, it’s just how some of us perceive humor.
I will agree with almost any choice in this thread (except for the next one.)
