What is the source of the speculation that Robert E. Howard was gay?

I have seen this speculation in more than one place, what the hell is the source?

I’m curious because its basically people saying well if you ignore the interviews with the love of his life who was a woman, and the interviews with a prostitute he frequented and was close to(also a woman) and the total lack of anything to indicate he was sexually attracted to men, aside from that doesn’t he seem deeply closeted? :dubious:

Joey, do you like [del]gladiator[/del] barbarian movies?

I’m no Robert E. Howard expert, but I was unaware of the speculation.

Yea I was wondering if it was the covers of the Conan reprints, but the actual stories have no homoerotic subtext that I’ve detected.

Hell it could be one person posting under different usernames but here is a example:

Personally I don’t care if Howard was gay, I’m just wondering what all these comments are referencing. Him being a “momma’s boy”? Shit whole cultures struggle with that it seems.

The people speculating this are probably the same ones that go to every male actor’s IMDB message board and make an “OMG IS HE GAY?” topic.

He appears to have had a rather significant Oedipal complex. After all, he committed suicide upon receiving the news that his mother was dying.

Whether or not that makes him gay, I don’t know. He never married. I read that, shortly before his death, he was dating a local teacher.

Do you have a link to the interviews you mention? This is the first I heard of his being involved with a prostitute.

He seemed more sexually immature than gay, but it is difficult to tell sixty five years after the fact.

Yeah, I’m willing to bet the “speculation” has more to do with what Frank Frazetta painted than what Robert E. Howard actually wrote.
