So, almost everywhere on the internet, wearing a Minecraft-related graphic/image as your avatar will get you shunned by many many people, simply because of that image. What causes this? I think Minecraft is a great game, it’s relaxing and easy to remember, and there is plenty of headroom for modding. I don’t really get why so many people appear to hate Minecraft gamers so much, while on the other side it’s the exact opposite. I’ve literally NEVER, EVER seen anyone say something “neutral” about MC, it’s either extreme love or raw hatred. For example, most comments in reply to a person with a MC avatar usually ignore the subject of the message and focus on the avatar only. For example: “Minecrafterman1212: Hey, has anyone ever been to Robert’s Resort lately? I’ve heard great things about it, do you recommend it?”, then the answers would be something along the lines of : “LOL, a MC idiot, haha!”
Would you use a Minecraft image as your avatar? What do you think about people who do this?
My nine-year old son is really in to MC, as are most of his peers. I know a few adult MC players, mostly builders and makers. I don’t see any condecension against MC players, but it IS seen as a kids game, a virtual version of Legos.

I’m sure that there are plenty of adult players. I mean, it is pretty much an all-ages type of game, since there are no real “kids only” themes plastered over it like in actual “kid’s only” types of games, and it it provides good quality entertainment. Plus, there are plenty of much more colorful games out there like Candy Crush, Farmville and Starjew Valley, of which probably have plenty of more mature players. I don’t see why Minecraft has to an exception, I thought games were for entertainment, so if it provides entertainment to the audience then it’s all good? If a “more mature” audience can be amused by clicking on flashy purple circles, then surely MC would be like the invention of the television?
Plus I mean it surely gets a bit silly after a while, especially when the MC’er is actually right, and the other people are aware of this, but they just want to troll for no reason. For example, recently I saw a comment column on youtube about a rocket launch or something. It went along like this:
And this person had about a dozen likes or something as well. It’s kind of sad that people will align themselves with people like that just to have a go at a person that likes a certain video game. I mean, at the end of the day, with hundreds and thousands of people trolling like this, there would probably actually be a sizable number of brand-new flat earth fresh recruits rolling in by the truckload, who were led astray by other trolls.
I have literally never seen this. And by “literally”, I mean “not figuratively”. And by “never”, I mean “really, truly, not once, ever.”
If you’re actually observing this behavior, that says more about the truly weird and unhealthy online community you hang out in than it says anything about Minecraft.
I’m an adult who loves playing Minecraft to de-stress and relax. I’m a gamer who is into many different genres, but there is something about Minecraft that is perfect after a hectic or stressful day. Sometimes, I’ll just chop down trees or mine for diamonds and it’s just what I need to quiet my thoughts so I can sleep.
I haven’t seen any actual stigmatizing, per se, but I do get the occasional odd look when I’m wearing one of the MC tee-shirts that I own. I just chalk it up to their loss though. It’s far cheaper than Zanax and it works for me.
But isn’t it that way with most things? If I think (your local sports team) sucks, I might decide to tell you so. But if I don’t care one way or another about (your local sports team), why would I bother to comment?
I’ll add myself to the people who have never seen what’s described in the OP. Not among random people on a non-gaming related forum and not among gaming enthusiasts. There’s genres where I do see people give a hostile reaction: first-person shooters (esp Call of Duty) or Japanese RPGs & Visual Novels (“weebs!”) but Minecraft isn’t one of them. Minecraft is sort of like the vanilla of gaming these days, almost completely inoffensive.
I suppose, among non-gamers, there’s some people who will react to any gaming avatar as “lol u play games, you’re a basement-dwelling loser” but that’s not Minecraft specific.
It’s also a dying reaction. These days, there are an incredibly small number of people that don’t game in some capacity. My (now deceased) mother-in-law was a Viva Pinata junkie- it was amusing, and endearing, seeing her game with a verve that I myself haven’t had for years- detailed notebooks of the color variants she discovered, breeding instructions, gardening ideas… it was great.
I don’t understand how anyone can feel truly insulted by people so lacking in wit or literacy. I do, though, personally put Minecraft in the same (slightly contemptible) bracket as Harry Potter and such. I still play it sometimes though.
Never seen this, and seriously dude (robert) you’re worried about what a flat earther and his pals say in a youtube comment thread? It’s youtube comments, people post a lot of incredibly dumb stuff there. I’ve never seen this, and I frequent some gaming forums, though not the flame-heavy type.
