What is the team name of the Russian National Football (soccer) team?

Title says it all? What is their name, if they have one. I’m assuming it isnt “Uncle Joe’s Pioneers”, or something like that.
Trotsky’s Turbos?

band names, anyone?

Well, if I’m not mistaken, their national team name is the Russian National Football Team. Just like there’s the English National Team. I don’t think national teams have mascots.

You’re probably right. A friend asked me and I had no idea. This should have occurred to me.

Sometimes they have nicknames or similar. For instance, Costa Rica is the Ticos. That said, I can’t think of any nickname for the Russians and don’t find any on the Russia forum at BigSoccer.

The homepage of the Football Union of Russia (English language version) is here. It just refers to the team as the “National ‘A’ Team of Russia.”

I didn’t see any mascot, although there is a team logo up in the top left corner of that page. As near as I can tell, that’s the Russian coat of arms (the current one with the gold double-headed eagle–not the old Imperial one with the black eagle) above the football.

The name Ticos applies to all Costa Ricans, not just their national teams.

I had not seen mascots outside of the US and Canada until some other Basketball leagues started getting them, but they haven’t really taken root. Most sports teams here in Spain are called after their home town.

Yes, it’s like calling Americans “Yanks” or “Yankees”. But you still have some African national sides with nicknames, like the Indominatible Lions (Cameroon) or the Nigerian Super Eagles.

When following the England team, you will hear chanting of “En…ger…land! En…ger…land!”

There was a popular song entitled ‘Three Lions on a shirt’ (referencing the symbol used by the lads.

The Mexican national team is often referred to as “Los Tricolores” or “Los Tri”.

Since Russia is still sorting out all of its baggage from the change over in styles of government and the breakup of the Soviet Union, it will probably be a while before they find a nickname that people can agree on.
