One that bugs me that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is the Lexington Legends. Minor league baseball team for Lexington, KY. Technically, the team is not a team, no stadium, no players, etc. And that is what bugs me. If it was a very good established team from someplace else that was moving here, great. But, for a team that is just starting out, they need to play a while to develope some legends before they take that name.
Pekin (IL) High School.
The city itself is named after Peking. When the time came to choose a mascot for the high school, the city’s leader decided to select a name that fit in with the Oriental influence of the city’s name. Their choice:
The Pekin Chinks
Sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s this was changed to the Dragons, and the team had always used a Chinese-style dragon as a mascot.
Wouldn’t the Pekin Ducks be so much better?
And Buffalo Bison is already taken. It’s the minor league baseball team.
I think “Brown” was a beloved, much-respected coach of the team during their formative years.
