I’m confused about the lighting on the head. There appears to be a swath of light from the bottom right to the middle left that doesn’t cross the head. At the risk of sounding completely ignorant: are you sure this isn’t photoshopped in some way?
Using google image search, I come up with a soft shelled turtle.
How about an extreme close-up of this guy with his neck fully extended?

Looks like the shadow of the photographer’s head happens to be perfectly lined up with the animal’s head.
