What is this critter?

A long, long time ago I was watching a National Geographic kind of show that was featuring animals that lived in the jungles of…(I forget).
There was this one particularly freaky spider/crab thing. It ate fish. It would hang the upper part of it’s body into a stream, its head and arms (?) would hang in water looking like twigs. When a fish swam by, the critter would grab it with its claws (or spear it, I forget) then drive its beak like mouth into the side of the fish and suck it’s guts out.

Neat huh?

There is a rain forest preserve near my house, I know the lake doesn’t have Piranhas, (probably), but could these things be living in there? Or perhaps this is an African jungle critter and not found in South America.

Actually, that sounds like a type of spider I’ve heard of; Google on “Dock Spider.” They’ve got some big ones in Ecuador.

Water scorpion, maybe?

Sorry, this didn’t get pasted:

So that’s my question, does this, um, thing sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds to me like a Giant Water Bug.

The fishing spider

It looks as though you may have some nearby, but they are apparently not considered hazardous.

Another photo and more info on Water Scorpions (not scorpions but aquatic insects).

I think they are probably worldwide in distribution.

I should mention, though my cite doesn’t say so, that giant water bugs are found worldwide, and there are many species.

Ahhh, that’s it, I’m officially freaked out! I love these threads that demonstrate all sorts of creepy new things you can imagine are under bed at night. The ** Water scorpion ** looks close but this things snout was equally as long as its front claws, imagine that Water scorpion with a spear for a nose.

As true bugs, these things have long hypodermic-like sucking mouthparts that fold under the head when not in use. In the photos it’s tucked away so you can’t see it.

That pretty much describes it, the web page you posted above says that also, I just missed it.It also says that they can bite. I have never seen one, I wonder if we have them around here.

I’m all itchy now. Yuk.
