My guess is that’s where the mods are putting all the pre-2000 threads that don’t get pruned. I could be wrong.
Nah, those threads are a hangover from the old UBB days. Mods started to archive some threads (which was doable in UBB), but the project was abandoned after the switch to VB since there is no separate “archive” category here.

Or possibly he just noticed that the forum numbers took a big jump between GD and IMHO.
