What is this limerick?

Years ago I read a limerick and can’t find the exact wording. The gist of it was a gas utility person named Peter using a match instead of a flashlight. The last line says that he destroyed the meter with the actual last line breaking the standard meter of the limerick. The last line was something like “As you can see he also destroyed the meter.”

Anyone familiar with that one?

This one?

A decrepit old gas man named Peter,
While hunting around for the meter,
Touched a leak with his light.
He arose out of sight,
And, as anyone can see by reading this, he also destroyed the meter.

Thanks. Not sure if that is exactly the same (don’t trust my memory of details from 30+ years ago) but the third and fourth lines were what I couldn’t recreate*. For some reason I still want the match explicit in the second line but if I knew for sure I wouldn’t have to ask on SDMB.

  • For purposes of this message I use recreate to mean both remember or make up a reasonable substitute.

I Googled on “named peter” match meter and found the following from here.

A decrepit old gas man named Peter
While hunting around for the meter,
Scratched a match for a light,
And arose out of sight
And, as anyone can see by reading this, he also destroyed the meter.

I also found the one that Lanzy linked, but I agree the mention of the match makes it much clearer what happened and how.

Thanks. Not only did I find the limerick but I found a new way to search Google.
