Some guy I know was telling a group this story today, and everyone scoffed at him, but I found myself thinking I’ve heard it before myself. In fact, I think I remember seeing it on my TV - either as part of a movie or part of a documentary of some sort.
A Catholic (Spanish?) woman was the maid for a Jewish family. The Jewish parents were away and the baby, who was at home with the maid, got really sick to the point where he was seemingly about to die. So the maid, fearing that the child was not “saved” either…had him baptized [by herself or took him to a priest].
Turns out the baby lives, the maid confesses to someone what she’s done, the Vatican starts claiming “rights” to this kid because he’s been baptized Catholic and thus is not a Jew, he’s a Catholic.
Does that ring any bells? What he heck is that from? I think in the version of the story I remember the kid grows up to be the protagonist of the story. Or a famous person. He does “become” Catholic.
I tend to watch a lot of religious documentaries so maybe this is not from a movie. Maybe it is. Maybe it’s a famous true story.
