As the designer of Pyroto Mountain, I think I can answer your question. 
TSOTL stands for “The Spirit Of The Land”. That is the literal translation. What it MEANS, however, is one of the central mysteries of the game.
What is “spirit”? Okay, I’ll give you a hint: what comes to mind when you hear the expression “School Spirit”?
The Pyroto system doesn’t explain TSOTL in any great depth. It is left up to the wizards to determine what TSOTL is – and in so doing, they help create TSOTL.
It has been said that “Man is created in God’s image”, but some people have countered this with the statement that “God is created in man’s imagination.” Make of that what you will. Is TSOTL a “tribal god”, or is it an expression of a more general principle?
I once wrote an article describing precisely what TSOTL was all about, but in the web version of Pyroto, I elected to eliminate this explanation. In my opinion, it is much more productive to have people talk about what TSOTL means to them than for me to tell them what it means to me. After all, I have a limited perspective, since I’m only human.
Some people have theorized that TSOTL is some kind of mythopoetic god. They’re wrong in many ways, but in a certain sense they’re right. I can’t say anything more than that without giving away too much.
If you focus upon the term “The Spirit Of The Land”, I think you’ll eventually get what it means. And when that happens, I think you’ll get a greater insight into the nature of spirituality.
Pyroto may seem like a game, but people who have played it for several years (it was invented in 1986) can tell you that it has an underlying message. I encourage you to ask them for their opinions.
If I was to tell you what the “message” of Pyroto is, I’d just be a preacher, spewing out my personal point of view. I don’t want to be that guy. Therein lies a hint as to what TSOTL actually means.
Pyroto gives you plenty of clues as to what TSOTL is. Hang in there and eventually you’ll figure it out.

The Clan spell still needs some work, so I wouldn’t use it quite yet. However, I can see from your Teeming Millions ether channel that the Straight Dopers know who they are – and they’re a very busy bunch!
I can’t really participate in the game as a regular player, for the obvious reason that I know the game far too well. I hope you’re not too disappointed!
