“Wine country” or “The north bay”.
Athens, GA is known as ‘Athenstown’
The Valley.
Because we’re in a valley.
Would it kill you to actually type the name of the place to which you’re referring, or is this some sort of cryptic circle jerk?
I’m guessing you’re from the “East Bumfuck” part of the state?
The Old Pueblo.
(Tucson, AZ)
It used to be “the Detroit area,” but now it’s “Southeast Michigan.” It also used to be the “tri-county area” (locally, of course, because I imagine there are lots of those in the USA), but we’ve exceed three counties.
“The East Bay”, part of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Cleveland, OH is my hometown and will always have a special place in my heart. But I love it’s nickname, “The Mistake by the Lake.”
i’ve also heard it referred to as “Chocolate City” and Chris Rock has famously said “D.C. stands for Dark Country”. i won’t say DC invented white flight, but it sure did take it to heart. the surrounding suburbs of Virginia and Maryland combine to form what some call the DMV. Prince George’s (PG) county in Maryland where the University of Maryland is, is called “piggy” county by some. the Northern Virginia suburbs are referred to by non-Northern Virginas as “Nova” but those living there hate the nickname because that’s what the local community college of the are calls themselves.
also, i’m pretty sure most major cities have a “west side” and a “south side” and the “south side” is often NOT the nice part of town.
addendum: Richmond, Va is called River City. Baltimore is called Charm City. and to whomever said Church City, I’m pretty sure that Charleston, SC prides itself on being the Holy City because of its many, many churches.
edit to add: Amongst NBA fans, we often like to taunt cleveland fans with that very Nickname Amp referred to. And with the recent loss of Lebron, have started calling it Leaveland as well.
Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill.
I’m in the Blue Ridge Highlands, not a nickname.
“The Shire”
It’s not a Tolkien reference or anything. The locals are somewhat insular and probably proud of the fact that the joint isn’t classified as a city. There are a couple of other parts of Sydney that are also suffixed as shires, but this the only one to latch onto it with a kind of xenophobic pride.
Cowtown or Sandstone City. Cowtown because we have a cowboy culture here (as seen in the Stampede, our local rodeo/exhibition/fair), and Sandstone City because there was a lot of building done with sandstone back in the day.
City of Sails.
(Auckland, NZ).
Bluff City or River City.
Or as the redneck kids call it, “Memphrica”.
A local TV station insists on using “Heartland”.
I hate it.
There’s an actual Bluff City, TN, at the other end from you.
The area within 20-30 miles (give or take) of Philadelphia, PA (USA) is called the Delaware Valley.
On the news, especially the weather segment, it’s pretty much all you hear. No one really tells you a big storm is bearing down on Philadelphia. “Tonight, the Delaware Valley braces for a Nor’ Easter…”
The Dirty 'Burg
Stumptown
Bridgetown
Beervana
(Portland, OR)
