I notice a wide variety of topics discussed on this board and I think it’s cool how people can ask questions on a variety of topics and get answers. So I bet a lot of people that post on this board represent a speciality, such as clergy members answer religous questions, scientists answer science questions, Doctors answer medical questions, and so on. Just what I’m asking is what kind of questions would you consider your specialty based on either your career, education, or life experience.
My specialty, from hanging around message boards, is recognizing in which Forum a thread should be placed. I would recommend that you e-mail a Mod and ask them to move this to IMHO (based on it poll-like nature), although it might fit well in MPSIMS, (based on the personal nature of the question).
I’m an aerospace engineer by trade.
I try to pick up all the flight, aerodynamics, and mechanics questions specifically, the physical science questions generally, and the run-of-the-mill geeky questions when they match my interests.
I’m also a car nut, and a big weekend mechanic. So I always try to throw my two cents in on the car questions.
General medicine is my main gig. I stay away from Peds more and more, since the last 2 years I’ve not seen a patient younger than 16, so I leave that to the good pediatrician DSeid and others of that ilk. Ditto OB. I trained as a medical scientist originally, but haven’t done much actual science, other than statistical analysis of clumps of clinical data, in many years.
Working in Corrections Medicine for 2 years has made me a semi-expert on prisons. Or at least Medicine in Prisons.
I’m also about a 3rd-rate Tolkien scholar. I’ve read all of HOMES 3 times now, but can’t keep it straight in my head, so mis-speak all too often. And I’m still not fluent in Quenya, much less Sindar.
Outside of those areas, I’m mostly just opinionated. Inside those areas I’m pretty opinionated too. But mostly right.
I’m a pilot, so I’m fairly comfortable tackling most general flying questions – provided Broomstick, Pilot141, or Sam Stone haven’t already answered!
I’m also a musician and contribute to musical threads when I can.
As a New Zealander come Australian, I’ll also speak up about general issues regarding those countries.
And QtM knows a fair bit about modesty.
I’m mostly here to learn. As a professional dishwasher, I often chime in on food- and coffee-related questions, although I usually avoid the recipie-swapping threads.
I do keep up with urban legendry, though, and often show up just to post a snopes link if nobody else has.
I wouldn’t describe myself expert in any field (although there are times when I would have; my knowledge in those fields has obsolesced, if that’s even a word) but I have a strong layman’s grasp of many subjects.
My specialty is mathematics, especially geometry, algebra, mathematical physics, and philosophy of mathematics. However, I make a point to be well read, and if I know something (or can expand on a niche) I usually will.
General Questions is for questins with factual answers. MPSIMS is for Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share.
I’ll move this to MPSIMS for you.

My expertise lies in Accounting, but surprise! I never get asked about that…
I love animals and crafts and children – suppose I could contribute the most to threads of that nature.
I was a critical care nurse for over 30 years the last 12 being pediatric ICU. I’m now retired. I craft stained glass, and I paint, but I’m an expert in neither. I can often answer medical and anatomy & physiology questions.
I know a little about a lot of things, but I don’t usually answer things I know only a little about. I don’t google I’m a computer failure. I have training wheels on this machine as we speak. I sometimes forget to review my replies and appear to be speaking a language beamed from another galaxy, because I can’t type either.
I’m a polymer clay artist and all-around crafty person. I have successfully raised a child to age 14 (so far) and can get stains out of vintage quilts. I also know rather a lot about Eddie Izzard, Kevin Smith, The Princess Bride and Renaissance fairs.
I’m:
Faster than a rolling O
Stronger than a silent E
Able to leap capital T in a single bound
It’s a word
It’s a plan
It’s ___________

I hope you stay, btw. That fortune telling thread you did with me was one of the funner ones I’ve been in.
I try to answer general science and math questions and then (promote my free website by saying "for more information go to www.1728.com "
Also, I’m pretty well-versed in 1960’s pop culture trivia.
Go ahead. Ask me anything about the Atlanta Braves or Paddington Bear.
[sub]See, not many people ever do, so I get away with looking a LOT brighter than I actually am.[/sub]
Well, now. Specialties include all aspects of home-made beer, wine and liqueurs, The Works Of Terry Pratchett, teaching in the secondary schools, and the ouevre of Joss Whedon. Other than that, I’m not nearly as smart as I think I am, and reading this board makes me realize that more each day.
I am still in high school, but there are times when that’s an advantage, like when someone says “I know we did this way back in high school, but I forgot it,” I still remember, because it was just last week, for me. I’m most likely to assist in math, Spanish, musical notation, and I’m fairly good at googling things.
