What is your favorite Hymn?

The final note of this one at the end of a long beautiful Easter vigil is the high point of my whole year.

Also Chris the Lord is Risen Today –

Made like Him/like Him we rise
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies!

Amazing Grace on bagpipes.

Jerusalem.

I’ll confess to not being keen on “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” A bit too triumphalist for me, I think.

Seconded.

What, we have some of those?

Yes, indeed.

I’ll also suggest:
Lord of All Hopefulness
Of the Father’s Love Begotten

Nice, yes.

I really liked the rendition sung at Indycar driver Dan Wheldon’s memorial service, televised on ESPN IIRC. A band, country band I think, with female lead singer and two male vocal backups. Beautiful, very moving. Great harmony.

A while back I tried finding a video of it, but could not. Does anyone have a link?

It’s awfully hard to list favorites. So instead I’ll list the four that will be sung at my funeral. If I didn’t like them I wouldn’t have them at my last hurrah.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

I Know That My Redeemer Lives

Thine is the Glory(Sung to the tune of Ode to Joy)

A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

I was born Lutheran, that last one might just edge out the others for favorite. But there’s a ton of other hymns I love to sing. Sometimes it depends on what season of the church year it is.

I just had a flashback to Mass in the 80s…

My four are:

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
What Wondrous Love Is This (and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on)
How Can I Keep From Singing?
Sing With All the Saints in Glory
I’m the worst singer evah so that must be why I gravitate to songs about singing – my mom wished for perfect eyesight in heaven, I wish for perfect pitch and a pleasant voice

Did it involve liturgical dance by the popular girls who took dance class?

Hymn of Promise (That one always chokes me up.)

For All the Saints Who From Their Labors Rest

Simple Gifts (my wedding processional)

Come O Thou Traveler Unknown

Lord of the Dance

And Can It Be (A minister in my church once called it “the Methodist Church fight song”)

How Can I Keep from Singing?

The Holy City

God Is Our Strength and Refuge, aka The Dam Busters Theme. I like hitting and holding the last note a full octave higher than the choir. Makes every head in the church turn around!

I’m sorry.

Hopefully LWIBR will forgive you.

Another vote here for How Can I Keep From Singing? That’s a fun one, we sing it with upbeat tempo.

Dendarii Dame, +1 for The Holy City.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition

This is the definitive version of Silent Night. It is achingly beautiful:

Stille Nacht

How Great Thou Art. Sung at my dad’s funeral. Reduces me to a wet blob.
Bringing in the Sheaves.
In the Garden.
In My Heart (There Rings a Melody)
