I’d add these to my list.
I gave up on EVE though…just too much work.

My top 5 are probably:
Witcher 3
The Mass Effect trilogy
Total War: Warhammer (Immortal Empires)
Cyberpunk 2077
Baldur’s Gate 3
I agree. I put in maybe 100 hours in, but the potential in the game is what I find inspiring. I was super into the shooter they put out.
Runners-up:
Baldur’s Gate 2
Baldur’s Gate 3
GTA Vice City
GTA San Andreas
Master of Orion II
XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within
Civ 2
Freelancer
Bushido Blade 2
Asteroids
Winner:
Final Fantasy 7
It’s a 3-way tie between BG3, Skyrim and Horizon:Zero Dawn
The Apple ][ original with the overhead view? I played a lot of that for sure.
My faves for PC games are probably the Mass Effect series, Half Life series, and Portal series.
I’ve probably played more Joust and Punchout! than most other games, in the arcade on on emulators and various home machines. Wizardry on the Apple was a good one, and Kareteka, oh man, so many.
Hmm, I don’t think I can pick one.
Oh yeah - definitely that one, too.
It’s funny. The conventional wisdom is that the video game industry is dominated by either Japan or the United States - and that everyone prefers games from either one or the other - but somehow, many or even most of my favorite games are actually European: from Poland (Witcher and Cyberpunk), Belgium (BG3), the UK (Total War) or the Netherlands (the Horizon games). There’s something to be said for European craftsmanship, I guess.
It’s eras for me, not sure if I can fill all of them in but here goes.
The dark ages (ZX spectrum, Sega Megadrive)
Attic Attack, Lords of midnight, Elite, Jetset Willy, Knights Lore.
Then alcohol stopped that, coming to the PC Dawn
Dune 2K, Monkey Island 2, Doom, Day of the Tentacle
The late 90s, 3d gfx:
Quake 2, Unreal Tournament, NOLF 2, Red Alert, C&C, Half Life
Then into the mainline modern age:
Bioshock, Portal 1/2, GTA 2, 3 and its variations, Far Cry 1, 3 & 4, Batman Arkham Asylum
Recent
Prey (and Mooncrash), Doom Eternal, Satisfactory, Wolfenstein (old blood/new order), Subnautica.
Deleted.

How did I forget that beautiful game? The little fragments of ancient stories you picked up were so well done I had to check and see if they were lifted from science fiction novels. They weren’t. And then the way the collected stories all dovetailed into a larger story about what happened in each compound/station, which itself dovetailed into a perfect climax of the main storyline. Oh I loved that game. Plus I shot a robot dinosaur with a bow and arrow while riding a different robot dinosaur.
Yup. That’s the one. My school had a computer lab with Apple II computers and my friends and I would stay after school and play that. Fun times!
And the followup was such a disappointment. I’ve stalled at it, it’s one of those “climb up high and then controls make you jump to your death” type of games. So many times I’ve got frustrated at jump across gap controls or went wandering off the wrong way. Such a pity, I really liked the original, and thought “how can the sequel be THAT bad”. And it was.
Not my experience at all. When I said Horizon:ZD I really meant the whole franchise - Zero Dawn, Frozen Wilds and Forbidden West. I love the storyline of the last one better, even.
Don’t forget Burning Shores. Hooray for Hollywood!
I agree - while the sequel lacked the first’s amazing backstory mystery (the best literary science fiction writing I’ve seen in a video game), it’s still a very solid, very fun game.
Wait, what? I missed Frozen Wilds as a thing. So you didn’t have problems with Forbidden West? Did you play it on the PC? My controls were awful, ten minutes of climb, crappy jump, and it wasn’t the jump, it was the likes of the sudden reversal and I end up jumping right out the wrong way. Happened a lot. I guess I must be highly intolerant of bad controls.
Nope. If anything, climbing was better in Forbidden West than Zero Dawn. And the other movement mechanics made getting around way more enjoyable - the Pullcaster, Glider, frigging flying!
No, Playstation. I would never play that kind of game on a PC.
Sounds like the PC version is a shit port. I had a lot of problems with the controls, so at least I know now.
The PC controls for HZD were terrible, especially if you were using mouse and keyboard. It was so bad that Aloy didn’t walk straight for the first month of release, so you were walking obliquely everywhere.
That’s not my experience. I’ve played both games on PC, several times, and I never had any problems using mouse and keyboard.
