What is your favourite video game?

Been considering what is the average person’s favourite game. Decided to ask here because I lack social confidence

Well, I’m above average, so I might not count for your information gathering purposes…

Total War: Warhammer
World of Warcraft

Those are my two biggest time consumers.

  • Thief
  • The Witcher
  • Red Alert
  • Wing Commander
  • Castle Wolfenstein (any version but especially the original)

ETA: Civilization 2—>5

The average person probably likes Roblox. If you exclude children, it’s probably Fortnite or Call of Duty.

I refuse to play World of Warcraft because I enjoy it too much and get carried away with it.

The games I’ve played the most in my life are Counterstrike, Diablo 2, Dota, and Destiny 2.

The game I’m playing the most lately is Rimworld.

I consider my favourite game to be Fallout 2.

I’d probably go with City of Heroes, given that it’s been my most-played game continually for the past five years or so.

Donkey Kong, Frogger.

Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Oof, ever? or currently? because “ever” it might be World of Warcraft, but currently the only game i spend any serious time on is Marvel Rivals.

I guess my sentimental favourite is the Mass Effect series (yes, including Mass Effect 3).

GTA V is probably my favorite game, although a close 2nd is an old Playstation One game called Siphon Filter.

I’ve got quite a few.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is probably my all-time favorite game. I know most of the secrets, too.

The Mass Effect Trilogy is right up there.

For sports, I go for NBA 2K26, WWE 2K25, and College Football 26.

What’s your favorite, @illusionsofhope ?

BattleTech (multiple platforms)
StarFleet Command (original)
Civilization
Harpoon
TacOps

Welcome to the Dope!

If I don’t think too much, SimCity 4 is probably my answer.

Civ 6 is a strong contender, but it kind of feels like cheating since I’ve always been locked in on each iteration of Civ since Call to Power 2.

NCAA 2014 would also be an easy favorite if the franchise didn’t completely disappear for over a decade. Do I keep coming back to play because it’s great or do I keep playing because it was the only college football game for 10 years?

But my upper elementary school teachers demanded that we show work so here we go:

First, I split my gaming history into BSC (before the start of college) and ASC (after the start of college). Then, I considered heavy hitters that didn’t quite make the cut before adding games that I revisited more than twice in the last two years. I tried my best to avoid COVID gaming because I spent a lot of time jumping around C64, DOS, old consoles, and current games.

All that said makes me realize I may not fall into the category that you consider “average”, but I’ll let you make those decisions.

Games that I put the most hours into BSC are:

Birds of Prey
Call to Power 2
Civilization 3
Deus Ex
Elite Plus
FIFA '95
Freespace 2
GoldenEye
Halo
Pool of Radiance
Railroad Tycoon Deluxe
SimCity
Sonic 2
Super Mario World
Utopia
Wolfenstein 3D

ASC games:

Civilization 4, 5, 6
COD 4: Modern Warfare
Crusader Kings 2
NCAA Football 2014
Railroad Tycoon 3
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3
Sid Meier’s Pirates!
SimCity 4
Stellaris
Subnautica

Mobile games I played during 10+ years of passively commuting (i.e. bus or train)

Jeopardy!
Monopoly
Settlers of Catan
Tower Madness
W.O.S.P.

Honorable mention from all eras (games I put hours into and periodically revisit, but don’t quite make the cut)

Civilization 4
Deus Ex
F-15 Strike Eagle
FIFA (any)
Freespace 2
Kings Quest 3-5
Madden (any)
Mario 3
MLB (2k9)
NHL (2013)
Sonic 3
Spore

Games that I have regularly revisted as recently as the past two years:

Civ 6
Crusader Kings 2
NCAA Football 2014
Pool of Radiance
Railroad Tycoon Deluxe
Sid Meier’s Pirates!
SimCity 4
Subnautica

I think, amongst a small group of classics, I have to say Tomb Raider II, the one from 1997, is my favourite. But I do like The Secret Of Monkey Island, Portal 1 and 2, and also the newer Tomb Raiders.

Civilization 5
Lord of the Rings Online

My favourite is Minecraft, closely followed by Cookie Clicker.

For me, it’s probably Lemmings. One of my fondest childhood memories is playing it with my Aunt as a child. It’s cute, it’s funny, and damned challenging.

All time favorite - Final Fantasy IV

Had the most potential - Xenogears

Best of the highly replayable games - Shin Megami Tensei III

I personally think the best games ever made are:
Dwarf Fortress
Baldur’s Gate 3
EVE Online

My personal top 5 games however,
Kingdom Hearts
Resident Evil 4
Sonic Adventure 2
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Dark Souls 2

HM: Zelda Twilight Princess / Final Fantasy IV
