I’ve never been tested and I don’t have a burning desire to be tested. I hate tests.

But my last GRE score tells me that I’m a smarty pants. Smart enough for Mensa, and smart enough to have been included in all those dang gifted programs as a kid. But my test scores were never quite good enough, or so I was told. I guess I fell through the cracks, but maybe it was all for the better.

Well, the group that responded to this poll is a self-selected group within the already self-selected larger group.

If you posted a poll for the men, “How big is your dick?” the results would be skewed, not just because SDMB men have bigger dicks than the male population at large (as everyone knows) but because the Dopers with the biggest dicks would respond disproportionately to the poll.

In just way is this MB self selected?

It’s ‘self-selected’ because we say so.

There is no MIT-like application/ acceptance process that vets the members, and we all know it. Show up at the front door and say, “I’m a french model”, and you’re in.

There is a huge (pun intended) difference between a poll that asks, “how big is your penis?”, and a thread that says, “be at 400 LaSalle tomorrow morning at 9:00 am and we’ll measure your penis.”

I mean, that State Farm commercial is a play on a theme we all know to be true; the internet is full of false, misleading, fabricated, and exaggerated claims.

And we not only perpetuate the myth that we’re the smartest people on the internet every time we say things like “we’re a self selected group”, but give implicit license to grossly exaggerate ourselves just to fit in.

Never been officially tested, but my brother has and he is way smarter than me (MD/PhD, high school valedictorian, 3.98 college GPA with little effort, his top 20 grad school was full of people who did undergrad at MIT, Caltech, Harvard, etc). His wife is a teacher who had some official tests and he scored about 130. That surprised me, I figured he would’ve been 150 or so.

So if he is 130, I’m probably 115. I have no idea though. I struggled to maintain a B average in undergrad, so I would be 110-120, I’d assume.

It’s not necessary to be a genius to do well educationaly - you just need to be a good student and in particular good at taking exams.

I have never taken a formal IQ test, at least not one where I was told the result (I took a rather exhaustive 2-day test once in 7th grade which had to be an IQ test, at a school which itself has a test based admissions exam to get into 7th grade). But I took an online IQ test once about 10 years ago that rated me at 145 (whatever that means), and based on my 1987 SAT score of 1460 I’d be admitted to both MENSA and “the Triple Nine Society”. Yippee.
