I just scored, via online auction, a Yashica Mat 124Gcamera. It came with with 3 lens filters (1x, 2x and 4x), a Metx 45 CT-1 flash and a hard case - all for $28.00! I just picked it up and everything appears to be in pristine condition. I could easily sell it for 10 times that much, but I’m going to order some 220 film and have some fun!
This allows me to select various genres. It then hunts around and finds terrific offers for free or very low-cost e-books within those genres. Since I signed up for it, I’ve probably gotten close to $500 worth of books for free.
2 weekends ago I went to 5 different places looking for an iron bird feeder post with 4 or more hooks on it. I only found doubles and they were all over $100. I was about to give up when I saw one with 5 hooks at a place a block from my home! Exactly what i was looking for! They only had 2 and both were being used for display but I asked the man if he’d be willing to sell one and he said yes! $65. I might go back and see if I can snatch up the other one too.
Renewal time for my TiVo subscription was due recently. I found out that TiVo was offering $99 lifetime subscriptions for older TiVos if you had a newer one. This means there is a glut of lifetimed used TiVos for sale.
So I got one for a very nice price on eBay. And this meant that now I qualified for the deal on my older one! So I did that. Two lifetimed TiVos for surprisingly little money. No more monthly fees and I can record more channels at the same time. Not to mention Mrs FtG and I can watch separate recorded programs.
I found a large Pottery Barn ceramic display bowl at a thrift store. I paid a little more than I like to pay, $18, but it was still a deal.
We found several cool things in the “it won’t fit in my car” pile outside the dorms when I went to get my Freshman daughter a few weeks ago. Electric scissors, brand new purse (with a pair of good swimming goggles in it), and several bags and bins to finish packing her things into (it seemed she had doubled her possessions in the 9 months she was away.)
A great deal in that it works - thumping the hell out of my back, neck, bum and even **haunches ** as advertised - it wasn’t on special or discounted, I paid the full price for a tapping massager and it’s the best thing I’ve ever bought.
I like gizmos and gadgets and I like deals, so I do a lot of shopping on Amazon. In the last six months I’ve bought the following:
An FM radio receiver for my iPhone. I think I paid $7.95 for it. It picks up broadcast FM, no wifi or data connection needed. It even displays the station call letters and song title and artist.
An FM clock radio with iPod dock for my iPhone for $12.86. It even has a remote control and has separable speakers. I’d put it up against a Bose system as value for your money.
An RCA pocket digital TV for about $28.00. I bought it for power failures as it runs on AA batteries instead of a rechargeable one. It gets decent reception with the built in antenna. It’s like the old Casio analog TVs, but with a digital ATSC tuner. Supposedly it’s 720p, but at 3.5", who can tell?
It’s only 33% off, but I used to have a set of these before they died. Now I’ve got another set.
Bluetooth headphones. Only $18 and FREE shipping! Easy, peasey. Only 3 buttons (because I used to be in the army and I can only count to four). Really comes in handy when I’m shopping. The only problem with this is that people can’t see the headphones without the earcords, so they STILL want to talk to me when I’m out and about.
I got a quote from Menards for about $1200 for materials (not including labor) to build a deck. Friends of mine found someone on craigslist giving away lumber from a dismantled deck - they have a trailer so I gave them $75 for gas money to make a couple of trips to pick up all the wood. A handy neighbor just completed building it for me - about 1/3 larger than the one I had priced - and all I had to pay for was lumber for the steps and a few boxes of screws and braces, plus of course I paid my neighbor for his time.
So I figure I saved about $1,000 and now I have a 10 x 25" deck that replaces the tiny little stoop that was previously off my back door. While the lumber isn’t brand new, it’s in excellent shape and once I finish it, nobody will ever know the difference.
I recently got a job for a consulting firm that’s known, among other things, for their workers dressing like they just stepped out of the latest fashion catalogs.
My preferred mode of dress includes comfortable underwear, espadrilles, jeans and a nerdy tee. Fashiowhat? And I can even get away with it, as I usually work in factories and for the Ops departments - I’ve had meetings where I was the dressiest person in my “I’m not weird, I’m special” tee and not-too-old jeans.
So I grabbed my mother (aka the Fashion Advisor) and headed to the outlet mall at la Roca del Vallès, which I knew my also very fashionable sister in law had loved. Dumped more money in one afternoon than I would normally spend in a whole year, but for things whose price would be in my usual range, whose original price had been 4x or 5x as much, and hey, now I’m set for “dressy professional” clothes for years!
