What is your problem, Chronos?

I was using it as another example of an unhelpful response, even though it was not technically a personal attack.

Chronos’ comment didn’t “cause all this friction”. Stranger’s completely out of proportion response did. Grow the fuck up.

Look, you’re welcome to be an asshole wherever you want to be on the internet. I’d rather hold FQ to a higher standard, but you do you.

It’s the internet. Getting upset about minor shit is almost the entire point.

And, to be fair, Chronos does, on occasion though with regularity, put up obnoxious replies. I don’t follow closely enough to tell if those are directed at specific posters or just general jerkishness sneaking in, but it does happen.

If you think that Chronos was being an asshole then you need your asshole detector calibrated.

Both of them are very smart with a broad knowledge and explain things very well. Typically. Both of them get things very wrong on occasion and dig in when called out on it by actual experts on the subject. Peas in a pod and valuable members of the board.

I think you’re being an asshole, which is why I wrote, “Look, you’re welcome to be an asshole…” It’s basically your default state, so that’s fine. I’m not going to turn this into another Babale show.

Back to the OP, I thought Chronos’s response was uncalled-for. But, you, OP, also have some pretty condescending responses as well, outside of the Pit. Agree with @hajario’s post.

Roflmao! Ok buddy. :+1:  :+1:

Chronos’s reply wouldn’t have been a big deal except that he was just wrong - Stranger did answer the question in his post, with great detail. If you’re gonna be dismissive of a post as avoiding the question, try to do the very basic reading required to verify that the post actually avoided the question.

I don’t know the history here. But in this particular case, I feel Chronos was addressing an actual mistake you had made.

The OP, HeyHomie, was asking about what would happen if you dropped an object from an altitude equal to the ISS - but without the orbital speed that the ISS has.

In your response, you made references to orbital speed and how it would affect the object’s motion. So you were not answering the question that the OP asked.

Chronos did answer that question and gave what seems like a reasonable answer.

Not really. The post he responded to basically said, “I know that if you dropped something from the ISS it wouldn’t fall because it is in orbit, but what if you used a space elevator?”. That question makes perfect sense for like 99% of the length of the space elevator; it doesn’t make sense at geostationary height (and as Chronos correctly pointed out, slightly above) where the elevator and anything on it is travelling at orbital speed.

There’s absolutely no reason for Stranger to have focused on the only part of the space elevator where the question is nonsensical - other than to show off how “smart” he is by “correcting” someone else’s “mistake”. In other words - being an asshole. Chronos correctly called him out, which is why Stranger got mad enough to throw a fit in this thread.

He zeroed in on the tiny length of space elevator right at the top where HeyHomie’s question makes no sense so that he could flex about how much smarter than HeyHomie he (thinks that he) is. There is literally no other reason to have answered the question the way he did rather than how Chronos answered it.

Rereading the post, HeyHomie specifically asks about dropping something from a space elevator at the height of the ISS.

This really seems like a storm in a teacup. Yes, Stranger’s initial response did wander off the mark from the exact OP, but that was somewhat understandable because the OP introduced the term ‘space elevator’ which isn’t really relevent to or necessary for the actual question.

And yes, that response from Chronos was a little more brusque than the tone one usually hopes for in this forum.

But nothing to get bent out of shape about. I guess both of you got out of bed on the wrong side this morning….

I think nearly everyone got up on the wrong side of the bed sometime ago.

I have always appreciated the contribution of both of these prolific posters. Maybe I am being nostalgic but I don’t think either of them used to indulge in the snark much.

Came in to say the same thing.

I was surprised to wake up and see this… I have a lot of respect for both @Stranger_On_A_Train and @Chronos, and usually look forward to both their posts, even if (or maybe especially when?) they disagree on the facts and maths of a matter. It’s that sort of substantive, factual back-and-forth that makes the SDMB special.

But an online fistfight? Maybe not so much…

I don’t have a horse in this race, but I hope you two can work out your differences somewhat amicably. You’re both greatly valued.

More like slapping each other with dead fish. But small ones.

I guess you must be referring to the Fish Slapping Dance?

Yup! Thanks for providing the link!

You’re welcome. Let’s hope we can all have a laugh, shake hands and get back to civilised discourse!

Chronos and Stranger are both awesome, but sometimes Godzilla and King Kong will get in a fight.

Is it Chronos or Stranger that sleeps in the Roman Colosseum?
