What I've learned about American every day life from tv and movies

Can you explain this one a little? Not sure what you mean! Are you saying American’s get their hair styled while they sleep? Where, on earth, did you see this?

I believe what they are saying is when Americans first get out of bed (on TV shows) they look fantastic - like someone did their hair over night.

kind of the opposite of reality, you know? :stuck_out_tongue:

Or in the case of Law and Order: SVU he is middle-aged, male with a shaved head.

Every senior officer on American detective squads is a sympathetic but stern figure who never does any real work. The real crime-solving is done by forensic people who complete incredibly complex tests with accurate results in under one hour.

Anywhere you go in an American city, there is always a place to park.

And you never have to lock your car.

All american women go to their jobs with three inches of cleavage showing.

This is what I meant.

What a country!

When people buy groceries, they always get them in the brown paper bags, and everyone always buys a loaf of french bread and carrots with the greens still attached. These two items must be bagged so they are sticking out of the top of the bag.

They buy celery. Always celery.

Yeah, I got that after I reread it (after I posted of course). I first read it as you saying it was unusual to have the door open into the living room and having an entry hall was the norm.

No one has screens on their windows, and no one has storm doors.

And the trees were green. In late October.

And your car starts without a key.

and French baguettes! They are poking out of the top of nearly every shopping bag shown on TV. Oops, missed that in the post ABOVE this one.

Any woman who wears big clothing, carries a big bag and parcels, and stands behind big furniture is not pregnant, no matter how big her stomach is.

To be fair, this one is actually true.

In my experience, schools where the classroom doors open directly outside are called “California style”. Obviously they exist in places other than California. I taught at a California style elementary school for a year–in St. Louis.

This campus was, more or less, the worst idea in the history of education. St. Louis isn’t exactly a frozen wasteland, but it can get very cold during the winter, and is also in a cozy part of the country called “tornado alley” and can get absolutely ferocious thunderstorms. Hey, in light of that, let’s build a school where the kids have to go outside to get to music class! Great idea!

This whole side conversation about schools with classroom doors that open directly outside is blowing my mind just a little. I had never imagined, let alone seen, such a thing. Anybody got a link to a picture of such a setup? I tried searching, but the googles, they do nothing.

Try the link I posted already.

Aw hell, here it is again. I swear sometimes I think I’m on ignore.

That’s a video, not a picture. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks though. I think when you originally posted it, I was reading the SDMB on a slow enough connection that I didn’t want to try watching a YouTube video.
