Just curious what kind of a living the actors who played the characters 7 of 9 or Deanna Troi or Elim Garak might be able to pull in by working the various science fiction and fantasy etc cons.
Any estimates? 5 figures, six figures, gas money? This income would be just from personal appearances at those cons or related venues.
Reddit answered that in some depth a couple of years ago.
It all boils down to the size of the star and how often they are willing to appear. From the looks of it, a listed (but not starring) cast member could pull down $80 - 90K a year just “working” every other weekend. The more popular ones can make **a lot **more. If you want the Shat to show up, be prepared to pony up $80K. Those are the guarantees against the money they make from pictures, autographs and stuff like that.
Levar Burton and Marina Sirtis are quoted as having $15K/weekend guarantees. If Geordie does 10 cons a year, that’s a nice little bump to the nest egg.
When I was running a convention, I got a notice from Allen Shepherd, seeing if we wanted him to be our media guest. I don’t recall the price, but it was probably around $1000 plus expenses. We turned him down since we don’t pay appearance fees, and it wasn’t as though he was much of a draw.
He probably only did a small number of cons, as proven by the fact you needed to click on the spoiler box to see who he was. At the point they were asking, I don’t think he even had a line of dialog.
When Denise Crosby left STNG, I told my friends that she’d never have to pay to go to a science fiction convention again. Who knew she could make a living at it?
Read an article about a documentary about people who were in Star Wars movies who apparently make stupid money simply appearing at conventions and selling photos and autographs and suchlike. They even have a hierarchy – people who had lines are superior to extras without lines, and apparently “face” people somewhat resent “mask” people who can make better money than they do, due to being more distinctive (the king being David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in all three original films, despite the fact that his face and voice were never seen or heard in any of them).
Nathan Fillion must make a fortune. At the last comic-con we went to, all the autograph lines for celebrities were in one hall - except for his. He had his own setup in another pavilion, because his lines were too long.
Am I the only person to think the OP recently saw “Galaxy Quest”?
Stories I’ve read say Shatner saw it and didn’t see what was funny. Frakes thought it was hilarious. Steward wasn’t interested in seeing it until Frakes talked him into it. He enjoyed it. Wheaton didn’t seem to enjoy being a former STer.
I bet Spiner might do even better at “Night Court” conventions, if they ever had them.
