I am a born-and-bred redneck, married to a city boy. We were raised hunting, but with guns, not bows. Bow hunting is big around here, and although there is no way my husband would let our son have a gun, I think I can slip a bow by him, as there are few reported cases of self-inflicted bow shots. That said, is anyone in here familiar enough with bows to recommend one that would be a good starter, but not a toy? My son is almost 14, stands 5’6", and has a good set of muscles from being on basketball/soccer teams constantly. He’s a good shot with a slingshot. I don’t want to spend a fortune, but I do want to invest in a good bow that he can actually bring down some game with.
I like PSE bows, I’ve been shooting the same one since I was 16 (24 years now). Find one that he can draw now but is adjustable up - maybe a 40-60 pound draw. Whole different set of muscles involved, so don’t get a heavy one just because he’s in good shape.
You’ll probably want one with an adjustable draw length, since at 14 he might grow a bit.
I have nothing against Bear bows, I just didn’t shoot mine for more than a year or so before going back to my PSE.
Sorry I’m not up on models, but something like the Nova SU for ~ $250 looks like a good starter.
Of course it’s best to get him in to try a few out (while steering him away from the $1000 rack) and listen to the guy behind the counter… Unless he’s an idiot, which is kind of hard to tell sometimes.
