What kind of bug is this?

We are in west-central Illinois. We currently see these bugs on our porch and in window sills. They seem to crawl, but I think I’ve seen them jump or something from time to time. I do always see them crawling though.

I guess we were afraid they were termites or something since they seem to be attracted to wood, but I thought termites were bigger than that. Any idea what they are? And yes, I do realize that is a Canadian dime in the picture for reference… that just happened to be in the change I grabbed.

Well, they’re not termites.

They appear to be either thrips or springtails. My money is on thrips, but I can’t see enough detail to help further. I suggest that you google pictures of thirps and springtails and take your choice, as you have seen them in real life.

Sounds like springtails to me, especially with the jumping. I usually see them hang out around damp or decaying things, and apparently they like to eat algae, fungi, and bacteria. They’re no more harmful than pillbugs, and a lot less gross.

I think you guys nailed it. They appear to be springtails. It’s kind of hard to tell because they are so small but what I’ve read about them and some pictures I’ve seen… it sure is looking like that is the answer.

I really appreciate your responses. Thank you!
