What kind of bug (larva?) is this?

Sorry I don’t have photos.

The last couple of days I have found a couple of small brown things crawling around on my dining room floor.

They are maybe 1/2" long and shaped like an elongated teardrop - blunt at one end, pointed at the other. The pointed end appears to be the “head” since as they squirm along they move in that direction and the point is constantly moving about like it’s sniffing around.

The blunt end looks like it’s got some tiny hairs or something. The critters are a bit on the plump side, maybe 1/8" thick at the most. They look like they are made up of a large number of segments, sort of like a pillbug’s armor.

My cat shows no interest in eating them.

What’s odd is I can’t figure out where they are coming from. With one exception they’ve all been on the linoleum floor around my dining room table. The dining room/kitchen is pretty clean, floor isn’t dirty, no standing water. When I got home from work today there was one on top of the kitchen table.

I looked all over, including up to see if there was some kind of hole in the ceiling where they might have been coming from (there’s not).

I did notice a couple of them right under one of the wood legs of the table so I’m wondering if they might be some kind of wood-boring critter? I’ve never seen anything like them and I’ve been in the house for about 8 years (as has my table).

I do empty my garbage and recycling containers regularly and clean them if they are dirty.

I have not found any of these things anywhere else in the house (yet).

Anyone got any ideas? Am I at the forefront of a teeny, tiny, Cthonian invasion?

Dermestids?

They eat almost anything, and are hard to get rid of once you’ve got them. Be merciless.

Hm, doesn’t really look right - they don’t have all those hairs like in the second photo.

I am merciless to the ones I’ve found. Squish and/or flush.

I see dermestids (carpet beetles) a lot, but mine look more like this. The little round guys are the adults.

Those still look to hairy overall - the only hair or whatever it is that I’ve noticed is on the blunt end - and the pointy end is really pointy; like I said, elongated teardrop shape.
