What Kind of Coat was this?

I walked past my friend from high school this morning and saw her wearing a type of jacket I’ve been looking for forever. Unfortunately I know nothing of fashion and jackets so searching is… difficult.

It wasn’t heavy, not a “light” jacket but not heavy. It seemed to be made out of a similar material that’s you see on the outside of a blazer, but the jacket didn’t look layered or insulated much (but I could be wrong). It was long (a little past ankle length) and below the waist it was split in back. It wasn’t as tight as any trench coat I’ve seen, and went down well below the level I see most trench coats go (I can only find trench coats about knee level, even by searching “long trench coat”), and I’ve also never seen trench coats with a split back. So I ruled that out.

It looked subculture-y, by that I mean it looked like something you’d see some flavor of hipster/scenester wear, if you changed the color a tad you could also probably fit it into a steampunk setting. It somewhat reminded me of the cloth coat Neo wore in The Matrix (or maybe Vash’s coat in Trigun but a little less ornamented and without the collar), but split in back. I see this referred to as a “trench coat” often, but I honestly can’t find a trench coat that looks anything like it by searching as I explained above.

Am I just looking in the wrong place? Any specific “tags” I’m missing that would help? Am I right and it’s a different coat type entirely?

Why yes, I am competing for “most pointless, obvious GQ thread.” Apologies for stupidity.

Sounds like a duster.

ETA: Link.

For the benefit of your searching, I can tell you that the split in the back of a coat is called a vent. I think twicks is on the right track with a duster. Trench coats are always, as far as I can tell, belted.

You might do better searching for “ankle-length” rather than “full-length.”

If it is indeed a duster you’re looking for any well-stocked Western Wear store should do the trick.

I’m not getting the Western vibe from the OP. I’m getting something that looks like a very long sport coat, perhaps with fairly narrow lapels.

How about a topcoat?

Your friend? Couldn’t you just ask her what it’s called, or where she bought it?

Jragon, would this be a men’s or women’s coat, or unisex?

What type of fastening does it have (buttons, zipper)? And what type of collar?

Is it anything similar to this (which is double-breasted with a back vent, although yours would be longer) or this (which is long with back vent, but in your case, maybe without all the silver studs).

Some more possibilities:

Long, double-breasted, notched collar

Similar, but single-breasted

With a zipper

If it wasn’t unisex it was a men’s coat.

I didn’t get the best look at it, and it was left open so the fastening was hard to tell. If there was a belt it wasn’t noticeable, probably button.

My old friend, I haven’t seen her in a little under a year and the last few times we’ve been in proximity we’ve kind of ignored each other so I think we’re on the wrong side of “not talking for whatever reason” to just call her (assuming my info is still even correct). And I’ve never actually called her so it’d be a little weird to start now. I may if I see her again though, but it’s not a given I’ll even walk past her in the next month or so.

That’s by far the closest. I’m guessing it’s probably a duster, do they make them with vents? It was windy this morning, so it may have just folded weird during the gust that swept up when I walked past her and gave the appearance of having one.

It sounds like a duster. Every year at the fair there’s a tent set up selling cowboy hats, boots, and dusters. I always try one on and give the hired help a good laugh since I’m so short the thing drags on the ground.

Looking at all those coats - I want one! But I’m too darned short.

I own a duster. It was pricey, but I bought it on a whim. It is not particularly comfortable, and it is a pain to keep clean and supple. I’ve worn it horseback riding (looks awesome) and for a Halloween costume (cowboy zombie). Other than that, it stays in the closet.
