So I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I need help.
I’ve decided to start by finding a new doctor–one who can address all my issues as a whole, since I think they’re all feeding off of each other and have me caught in a vicious cycle.
For example, my depression and anxiety causes me to eat horribly and too much, which makes me overweight, which makes me depressed, etc. I’ve tried many, many times to change my diet and to start exercising, but can never stick with it–I think, due to my mental issues. But I think if I could figure out some way to get some will power, diet exercise and diet could really, really help my depression without me needing to go on meds for it. (Which I would love to avoid if possible. Been on several different types in the past and none of them ever really helped.)
Also fairly certain I’ve got some hormonal issues going on, which contributes to the “no will-power,” depression thing. I know I have low thyroid, but suspect I may be on the wrong meds for it. I usually have one or two days right before my menstrual cycle starts where I feel great…lots of energy, find it easy to eat healthy and I get all ambitious about my new life, then I sink back down to days where sometimes it’s difficult to even get out of bed in the morning. I think for that day or two I experience what “normal” people feel like. I’d like to figure out how to replicate that feeling all the time. (When I mentioned this to my current GP, he kind of pooh-poohed it and basically ignored it. Hence why I’m now looking for a new doc.)
So my question for dopers is…what kind of doctor would specialize in this kind of thing? Specifically, hormone and/or thyroid issues? And how do you doctor-hunt locally to find a good one?
