Ah, prostaglandins! The sweet sweet hormone that ripens the cervix and gets ladies on the fast track for labor. Used in the form of gels at hospitals, this hormone can also be readily found in a man’s ejaculate. But the question is, how much prostaglandin is in the average load? And as a bonus follow-up, how does this level compare to the medical gels?
This article from WebMD suggests that it’s enough. One prostaglandin-containing drug (Prostin E2, which is not a gel and is not taken by mouth) contains 20 mg of prostaglandin E2. The amount of all prostaglandins in one mL of ejaculate, as determined in one study, was 2-272 mcg/mL for PGE prostaglandins and 53-1094 mcg/mL for 19-OH prostaglandins. (cite; 1000 mcg = 1 mg) So the amount – even if it’s higher than average – is less than in the drugs, but apparently experience shows that it’s enough.
Oh, I should probably add the obligatory disclaimer for medical-related posts: I’m not a doctor, and you should ask your doctor for more information before trying anything.
Of course. But the doctor has said sex is fine. I’m also not so desperate that I’m going to do anything dumb, like look on the net for some back-alley prostaglandin gel.
