What little things make you happy?

My cat sitting on my chest, purring loudly and kneading.

Emails from my Mom.

Small surprise gifts from my husband (usually candies of some stripe).

Warm California summer nights.

Hot California summer days with an ice chest of cold beer, or a tall pitcher of iced tea.

Wildflowers.

Hugging my husband when he gets home from work.

Unexpected compliments.

The particular sensation of half-waking in a cool room on a quiet morning in a firm bed, with a fat pillow.

Chilled grape juice. Vernor’s Ginger Ale on the rocks. Snyder’s of Hanover Pretzel Pieces. Smoked salmon.

A great song I’ve not heard in years listened to in its entirety in an incongruous place.

Letters, with photos, from distant friends.

Giving/receiving a truly thoughtful gift.

Revisiting my childhood.

Being equal to the generosity of my family and friends.

I forgot that one–fresh, clean sheets make me unreasonably happy. Preferably Egyptian cotton–no poly/cotton, that’s just nasty. The only down side is, it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning. Sometimes I just want to stay in bed all day, 'cause it feels so good.

The bobbin winder on my new sewing machine works.

I made eighteen buttonholes with that machine in about ten minutes the other day. It only requires selecting the right stitch and then putting on the buttonhole presser-foot.

Sharp scissors. One little bitty very pointy one and one pair of razor-edged shears. I love using good tools.

It’s a longer story and I’ll tell it some time, but the short form is: health issues I didn’t know I had have been resolved and I feel good. And look, the sun has come out!

Finishing projects. And having them come out right.

Joe Cocker or Leon Russel on the stereo, at dawn.

That first hit of caffeine in the morning. Whether it’s tea, or coffee, or a Coke, it just tastes obscenely good. (Addicted? Me? No way! Okay. Maybe! So what?)

Listening to a light, jazzy track on my iPod while watching the world from the bus on a nice, sunny morning. Seeing people bicycling, hurrying to and fro, laughing and gesturing with a cool soundtrack in the background makes me feel like I’m in the opening credits of a hip foreign film.

Hanging a freshly-pressed shirt in the closet.

Cracking up with my husband, especiallly when we keep a back and forth going until we’re both gasping for breath with tears running down our cheeks.

That moment when you’ve finally found the most comfortable position, have the pillow and blankets arranged just right, and you’re drifting off to sleep.

Oh, my, so many things . . . but to name a few:

*My Allman Brothers CD, in the car, on the first day of the year that’s warm enough to drive with the windows down.

(And OK, I’ll admit it . . . ditto for the Kenny Loggins CD  )

When they have made-to-order quesadillas in the cafeteria where I work.

The back of SkipMagic’s head when he’s just gotten a haircut. *

Beer. Specifically, drinking beer at happy hour with – among others – a couple of 26-year-old hotties from work.

Wind.

Taking a bath with my SO.

Lying on the couch with my SO while we watch TV.

Playing my MMORPG for hours on end.

When my cats come running to the door when I come home.

Sneaking a cigarette, which my SO hates.

Beer.

Coffee. Preferably good coffee, but most any will do.

Beer or coffee and cigarettes – life doesn’t get any better.

snuggling
My daughter being mischievious and confident.
a good zit explosion
Getting a really deep ingrown hair to pop out.
making a silly tune stick in KellyM’s mind
fog
making my friends roll their eyes
very bad jokes
hugs from my daughter
odd numbers

Sunlight, a nice wind, rustling leaves, the sound of the train passing in the mornings, a loon call, waking up early to watch the sun come up, the first snowfall of winter, getting my clothes hot out of the dryer, and the way the first bite of a chocolate bar tastes, and so many more.

Wind in my sails.

Smell of leather in my car.

Delicious home cooked meal at the end of a long day.

My children’s laughter or just the sound of their breathing when they are asleep.

First cup of coffee at 5:00am before gym.

New clothes (especially at huge discounts).

My home freshly cleaned.

Passing someone on a hill climb on my bike.

Driving the car like it’s stolen.

Watching my daughter at swim practice.

Watching my son on his razor scooter.

Roses.

A beautiful girl smiling at me unexpectedly.

Summer’s coming in fast, so here’s a small, simple pleasure: Driving barefoot.

Brand new socks

When something I cook turns out perfect, and eating it.

Watching my daughter play softball. Reminds me of myself. She’s just very composed and methodical.

Spider Man comic books

Thinking about when my daughter told me that I was cooler than Spider Man.

My marble rolling pin. Nothing flattens pie crust or pizza dough like that beauty.

Wednesday night tv. Lost-Mythbusters-Good Eats

Hockey. In the absence of hockey, NHL 2004 and Miracle on dvd.

My lovely fiancee Alias

My dog Zoe.

New books.

A cool breeze, especially on a hot day.

My new kitty.

Tyler, my cockatiel (all the more so since his cage-mate died last week :frowning: She was a sweet little bird who was afraid of everyone except me. Now, Tyler gets twice the head-rubs)

Rainy days.

A cheese bagel and a Pepsi for breakfast.

Coming home after work.

At the moment the fact that this guy returned to work after being gone for over a week makes me so immaturely happy. Also that parchment paper is the best $2.50 cooking experiment I’ve ever tried. Cookies just slide off, just like they promised!

In general:

the sensation that you feel when sleepily rubbing your foot against a very soft blanket or sheet.

The sound shoes make on a hard surface.

Checking my e-mail and seeing that it’s feedback on a story.

Making people laugh.

New visitors to the railing to eat bird seed. (newest visitor: what bird is the size of a cardinal - but plumper and uncrested- has a black head/wings/back, white underside and a vivid red spot about the size of a quarter on his chest? hmm) Both feathered or furry are welcomed.
