I’ve recently purchased a house with three door locks in the back and one door lock in the front. The front door is aluminum (or steel, can’t tell) and opens outward into an enclosed porch. I’d like to leave the door that connects this porch to the rest of the house open all the time and make the exterior porch door the one that stays locked when we’re away. This way seems a little more burglar-resistant to me than having the “secure” door inside the porch, where neighbors and passersby can’t see the guy inside taking his time with it.
Unfortunately, as the door opens outward, I’m having trouble finding a second lock that will work in it. Here’s a picture of the inside of the door to illustrate the problem. The surface of the door is perpendicular to the section of the frame that the other part of the lock would mate with. I don’t have the hardware to drill through the metal for a deadbolt, but I’d like something a little beefier than a chain. I don’t need to be able to open this door from the outside, so something like a barrel bolt would be fine as long as there’s a way to make it work at that bizarre angle.
I’ve been to the hardware store and the hardware section of a few discount stores and haven’t found anything appropriate. Does anyone have any ideas?
