Today (yesterday, actually, the 10th) was my birthday.
I spent the morning browsing online, and the afternoon volunteering at the local GLBT community center, building them a much-needed database.
I helped a lesbian couple with a computer problem, and then introduced myself. Shook hands with one of the women, and then tried to shake the other one’s hand, at which point she pulled her hand back, making exclamations of great pain. I stood there bewildered, asking if she was all right. Finally, she looked up and grinned, and said “Watch yourself. You’re way too hot.”
I promptly got flustered, blushed, and retreated. I’m really not used to getting compliments from strangers. I’d love to have the chance to get more used to it; that was amazing.
I stopped by the post office, mailed my taxes. Came home, cleaned a bit, and then my boyfriend came home and started making Navajo tacos, an amazing meal that involves home made fry bread. Friends arrived. Mom arrived. We hung out on the porch, talking about nothing in particular.
Dinner was great, and then Mom broke out the ice cream cake for dessert. I think the ice cream involved was called Amazon Rainforest Chocolate Crunch. Whatever it was, it was amazing.
Mom gave my boyfriend and I a present. Her wedding ring. She wants us to have the jewelers who’ll be making our wedding rings use the gold from hers. It’s an incredibly touching gesture.
Of course, she also threw in a gift certificate to Michael’s. A friend gave me a gift certificate to Best Buy. Oh, and I gave my mom a series of computer progams that’ll help her learn a little French for her trip to Switzerland this fall.
And then… then there was my boyfriend. The man I’m going to marry. I guess I should say that I’m notoriously hard to buy presents for. Most people in my life have given up, and get me gift certificates. But my boyfriend…
He gave me a good keychain sized multitool. A copy of The Action Hero’s Handbook. And The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension.
He knows me. He went out, and hunted down the perfect gifts for me. He told me he figured I’d love the Action Hero book, because I seem to collect all sorts of weird trivia. He remembered the time I told him how to cook a porcupine. He figured out exactly what I wanted.
He loves me. He knows me. He makes me happy.
Oh, and then we all went bowling.
I had a good day today.
