What make/model is the red convertible in several scenes in The New Girlfriend (2014)
Looks like a Mazda Miata.
It’s visible from behind 10-12s into the trailer in jane’s link. My first thought is that looks like a Honda badge?
I think you are right. Looks close to the 2007 model here:
as they say on the car sites, “The answer is always Miata.” though technically it’s an “MX-5” 'cos I don’t think they use the Miata nameplate outside of the US.
The don’t appear to have “The New Girlfriend” yet, but Internet Movie Car Database is an invaluable tool for this type of question.
I suppose technically it would be a Eunos Roadster, since that’s the name Mazda uses in its home market (it’s not even badged as a Mazda). MX-5 is the global name. I never understood why they didn’t use it in the US.
I thought it was more like a 2013. Rear end images: https://www.google.com/search?q=mazda+miata+2013&client=safari&hl=en-us&prmd=isvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiGkonEqaDMAhUEwWMKHVuLB_MQ_AUIBygB&biw=1024&bih=672#hl=en-us&tbm=isch&q=rear+end+mazda+miata+2013
Actually, only the first generation Miata was known as the Eunos Roadster in japan. During the '90s, Mazda tried having separate brands to cover different market segments, similar to how GM has Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac etc. They sold the ‘Roadster’ under the Eunos brand (the other two were Autozam and ɛ̃fini). By the time the second generation Miata came along they’d done away with brands and the car was sold in Japan as the Mazda Roadster.
It’s always been called the Mazda MX-5 Miata in the US. However, when the third generation Miata came along, Mazda US tried to do away with the Miata name, only referring to the car as the MX-5 (and not even having the Miata name on the car or in brochures). This was because market research showed that the Mazda name wasn’t very strongly recognized by the public but ‘Miata’ was. So in a classic case of throwing the baby out with the bath water, they tried to elevate the value of ‘Mazda’ by downgrading the recognition factor of ‘Miata’.
This is why they gave their cars names like Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6. to more or less force people into using the word Mazda when referring to the individual models. They also increased the size of the hood logos and added more of them to the cars.
To this day the car only says ‘Mazda MX-5’ on the back, although they do use the name ‘Miata’ once again in the brochures.
Mazda’s marketing slogan in North America has changed to ‘Driving Matters’. They are de-emphasizing ‘Zoom-Zoom’. (Or, Z8M Z8M, as I saw on a Texas license plate on a blue RX-8 in Austin recently.)
